Lucknow Metro gets Maximum Speed Certificate of 90 Kmph

LUCKNOW: Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) achieved significant milestone by getting the speed certificate from RDSO after going through the detailed design of Lucknow Metro train on February 14. With this speed certificate metro can conduct the trial of trains at maximum designed speed of 90 kmph on the priority section on Kanpur Road.

LMRC managing director, Kumar Keshav has assured earlier that he would try to get speed certificate from RDSO in early February to be able to run commercial operation of train by March 26, 2017. His team followed the orders and achieved certificate from RDSO within deadline.

In continuation with the ongoing trials, metro train on February 14 ran in the morning at 11:30 am at a higher speed of 60 kmph from Transport Nagar to Mawaiya metro station. The train had run all the day with all safety parameters being successfully evaluated and achieved during this high speed trial, said LMRC officials.

LMRC said that few of prerequisite tests of train have already been completed at test-track and ramp within depot. “All efforts are being made by LMRC to complete the testing and commissioning of trains within the time-frame”, said officials. The state government has instructed LMRC to begin commercial operation of metro from March 26, 2017.

A metro train goes through different types of testing before beginning its actual passengers’ operations. It would also have to go through load tests where artificial loads equivalent to crush loading of 8 passengers per square meters would be put on train. To achieve this, huge number of sand bags would be used in the train.

LMRC said that European experts are continuously monitoring the systems and trains and ensuring best technical support to the metro’s technical team. “LMRC is taking all initiative to ensure that the metro train is ready for public operation by the end of the March, 2017”, it added.

Lucknow metro train design revealed

INDIA: Lucknow Metro Rail Corp and Alstom unveiled the appearance of the Metropolis trainsets for the city’s future metro line on May 10, in the presence of Akhilesh Yadav, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

LMRC ordered 20 four-car Metropolis trainsets in September 2015 as part of a €150m contract which also includes signalling for the line.

Alstom said the styling was 'a tribute to the city's cultural richness', with the front end 'conceived in the spirit of' the gates to some of the city's most important monuments, including the Bara Imambara congregation hall, Asifi mosque and Rumi Darwaza gateway. The V-shape of the lower section of the front symbolises ‘dynamism and rapidity’, while the livery is 'both highly modern and very much inspired by the traditional cashmere craftsmanship of Lucknow'.

The trainsets will have 186 seats arranged longitudinally, and include two dedicated zones for passengers with reduced mobility.

The cars will be produced at Alstom's Sri City and Coimbatore plants in India. The Urbalis communications-based train control will be jointly supplied by Alstom's sites in Bangalore and Saint-Ouen in France.

The metro line connecting Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport and Munshipulia will have 19 stations on a 19·4 km elevated alignment plus three on the 3·4 km underground section. The 8 km first phase is scheduled to open at the end of 2016. The line is predicted to carry 430 000 passengers/day in its first year of operation, rising to more than 1 million/day by 2030.

Amity University students to give inputs in designing Lucknow Metro Stations

Lucknow: Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation shortlisted nine artworks by students of Amity Institute of Architecture and Planning and Amity School of Fine Arts whose concepts of art works would be used while designing metro-station.

Earlier LMRC had also discussed prospects of developing some concepts of art works for stations through the students of Amity University. A competition among students for artwork depicting the rich cultural heritage of Awadh and its specialty was arranged at Amity University. Sixteen entries were shortlisted for the final round. Finally nine artworks of students of the Amity Institute of Architecture and Planning (ASAP) and Amity School of Fine Arts (ASFA) have been shortlisted out of total 55 participating students.

LMRC also felicitated these students on Saturday by presenting them with ‘Certificates of Participation’ and cash awards. The corporation has tied up with the Amity University to impart training on managerial and communication skillsets to newly recruited engineers and officials in the LMRC. The university felicitated 57 Lucknow Metro new recruits by presenting them ‘Certificates of Achievement’ for undergoing a training programme on managerial and communication skills at their campus. This training programme has been designed by Kumar Keshav, Managing Director, Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation and has been customized to impart specialized training to the young recruits to sharpen their managerial and communication skills in regard to their profession.

These new recruited officers and engineers of LMRC were conferred with ‘Certificates of Achievement’ in the auditorium after completion of their training on November 7. Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) had tied up with the Amity University for providing this training to its directly recruited fresh candidates that lasted from 15.10.2015 to 30.10.2015. This training programme was planned with an endeavour to enhance the competitive communication skills of assistant engineers, assistant managers and junior engineers with the finesse of corporate communication and soft skills that define the value of present day technocrats and management professionals.

The training programme witnessed an enthusiastic participation from the vibrant and young officials who were given intensive workshop – specific training on modules of confident communication, interpersonal skills, customer care, conflict resolution, leadership skills, presentation skills, business meeting, business correspondence and professional grooming.

Alstom bags 150 Million Euro Contract from Lucknow Metro

Lucknow: Railways equipment and services provider Alstom Transport on Monday said it has bagged a contract worth over 150 million euro from Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC).

The company will provide the LMRC with coaches and signalling solution for the new metro network of the city under the order which is valued at over Rs.1,100 crore.
“We are delighted that LMRC has entrusted Alstom with the supply of its first metro,” said Dominique Pouliquen, senior vice president, Alstom Transport Asia-Pacific in a statement.

“This is an important project for Lucknow’s inhabitants as they will soon be able to commute from the north to the south of the city onboard a metro that is safe, fast, reliable and environmentally friendly.”

Under the contract, Alstom Transport will supply 20 ‘Metropolis’ trainsets, each composed of four metro cars.

Each car will be fitted with air-conditioning and a passenger information system, the company said.

The metro cars will be produced at the company’s Sri City train manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh.

According to Alstom, more than 4,500 Metropolis coaches have been sold worldwide since 1998. They are currently being employed in cities like Singapore, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Amsterdam and Paris.

Furthermore, the company will provide ‘Urbalis‘ communication-based train control (CBTC) solution to the LMRC.

The CBTC controls the movement of the trains, enabling them to run at higher frequencies and speeds in total safety.

“The headway (interval between services) of the Lucknow metro will be 100 seconds,” the statement said.

The metro cars will be produced in Alstom’s Sri City train manufacturing facility in India. The signalling system will be jointly supplied by Alstom’s sites in Bangalore, India and Saint-Ouen,  France.

Alstom has strong presence in India where the company has been awarded important metro projects for cities including Chennai, Delhi and Kochi.

Alstom’s Metropolis is a world leading, proven, safe and reliable train that has been sold in over 20 cities around the world, including Singapore, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Amsterdam and Paris. More than 4,500 Metropolis cars have been sold worldwide since 1998.

Lucknow’s new metro line is expected to be around 23-km-long and include 22 stations comprising of 19 elevated ones – while the remaining three will be located underground. The project is expected to be executed in two phases, starting with a first corridor of 8.4 km. The first corridor line is expected to carry about 430,000 passengers per day from the initial year of operations. The number of users is expected to increase to over one million by 2030.

The company has earlier participated in metro rail projects in Chennai, Delhi and Kochi.

Lucknow Metro Rail plans to include 3 more phases in the city

Lucknow (LKO): With Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation planning to include East-West (E-W) corridor in phase I of the project, some more phases of metro rail are likely to come up in the city over the next 15 years. Phase I comprises a 35km metro-track from Amausi Airport to Munshipulia under North-South corridor (about 23 km) and from Vasantkunj (on way to Malihabad) to Charbagh railway station (about 12 km) under E-W line.


Metroman E Sreedharan said, considering rapid development and population growth in state capital, it would be imperative to have at least 150km total metro-route in city to fulfill most of the commuting needs in the next 15-20 years.

Sreedharan said, “We believe Lucknow metro would need more link routes in future to cover most localities. Hence, we need to launch more phases of metro over time to cater to maximum people.” LMRC managing director Kumar Keshav said at least three phases of metro need to be launched in city to cover the population.

Earlier too there were talks about constructing some link routes to the two main corridors. A link route was planned up to Shaheed Path along which many housing projects are mushrooming and the area is considered highly pristine. The same route was to cover localities of Gomtinagar and its extension. Another plan was to run metro from Awadh Hospital Chouraha on Kanpur Road up to Sitapur bypass near IIM, Lucknow.

Lucknow: UP government will be making a strong pitch for the Lucknow metro rail before the public investment board (PIB) of Union finance ministry on Thursday for approval of the multi-crore-rupee project funded through foreign agencies.

Sources in the state government said a team led by UP chief secretary Alok Ranjan and principal secretary (housing and urban planning) Sadakant is likely to apprise the board of the project’s existing status for the much needed clearance that could pave way for funds not only from Centre but also from foreign agencies.

Sources in the state housing department said, with a total estimated cost of over Rs 18,000 crore, the project is not likely to materialise without aid from external agencies. A senior official in the housing department said the state government has been in touch with foreign agencies like Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) to fund the project. “But that is not possible if the PIB does not give the due clearance,” the official said.

“Part of the project has already been executed by the state government with its own funds. Now we need Central and external aid to push the project further,” said Sadakant, while speaking to media.

The PIB approval, sources said, would mean LMRC getting over Rs 170 crore from Centre, besides over 20 million Euros from EIB. UP government had in its state budget sanctioned Rs 100 crore for an 8Km priority section stretching between Amausi airport and Charbagh. The UP government has also been planning to marshall funds through long term credit.

Earlier, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had sought intervention of Prime Minister Office (PMO) in a bid to fast-track the project.

Lucknow (LKO): The chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh, Alok Ranjan has said that Lucknow Metro rail is an ambitious project of the state government and any delinquency in its implementation would not be pardoned. He directed the department of housing and urban planning to take immediate action on proposals received from different government and semi-government departments for providing the land to LMRC for metro construction.

He asked the LMRC (Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation) officials about the requirement of funds and said that lack of funds should not impede construction of Lucknow Metro rail project. He directed the Housing Development Board, Lucknow Development Authority and UP State Industrial Development Corporation to immediately provide the remaining amount of FY 2014-15 for development of metro rail to LMRC along with contribution specified for FY 2015-16. The state government has recently sanctioned around Rs 100 crore to the project.

He directed that in view of problems being faced by metro officials while purchasing of private land through negotiations for stations and other purposes for Lucknow Metro Rail project, the committee formed under divisional commissioner, Lucknow should meet immediately to resolve the issues and take effective action to make the land available to Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation. The chief secretary was reviewing the progress of Lucknow Metro Rail project on July 27.

Managing Director, LMRC Kumar Keshav informed the chief secretary that the progress on primary section of metro rail from Charbagh to Transport Nagar (about 8km) has been satisfactory and according to the key dates fixed for completion of works by December 2016. The meeting was attended by secretary, Housing and Urban Planning, Pandhari Yadav, Managing Director, LMRC Kumar Keshav along with other senior officials.

Provide land required for Lucknow Metro on priority: UP Chief Secretary to officials

Lucknow (LKO): UP chief secretary Alok Ranjan on Monday issued directions to concerned departments to provide land required to Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) for stations and other purposes on priority basis. The CS was reviewing the implementation progress of Lucknow Metro.

In order to speed up the acquisition of private land for the project and resolve other land related issued, the CS constitued a committee headed by the divisional commissioner and comprising district magistrate, city magistrate and other officials of departments related to land acquisition and Metro as members.

The CS said that funds required for development of Lucknow Metro should be arranged on monthly basis and directed UP Housing Development board, Lucknow Development Authority and UP State Industrial Development Corporation to immediately provide their share of contribution to the LMRC. Expressing satisfaction over the progress in the metro project, he said that the work should be continued in the same spirit and manner in future to complete the project on deadline.

Managing Director, LMRC, Kumar Keshav presented the detailed progress against the key dates on the activities on primary section. He said that till now, the progress was according to the timelines specified to complete the project in December 2016.

RITES submit Detailed Project Report on Metro Rail to Varanasi Development Authority

Varanasi (BSB): Moving ahead in the direction of bringing metro rail project for bringing improvement in urban transportation system, Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) has submitted its inception-cum-options report to Varanasi Development Authority (VDA).

This report would be tabled during next meeting of VDA on June 17 to take further decision. The meeting will be chaired by the VDA chairman and managing director of Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) is also expected to participate.

VDA secretary M P Singh said on Wednesday that RITES has submitted its inception-cum-option report to VDA on proposed metro rail service in Varanasi. In the presence of VDA chairman and LMRC MD, the officials will go through the report in order to identify the routes on which this service should be introduced on priority. After deciding the route, RITES would be asked to prepare the detailed project report, after which the cost of project will be estimated.

Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had announced metro rail service to Varanasi in December 2014. After the approval of state cabinet to the proposal of metro rail, Varanasi Development Authority was appointed the nodal agency to initiate the project under the supervision of LMRC MD. For initial exercises like DPR preparation, a budget of Rs 3 crores was sanctioned.

If the officials approve the inception-cum-option report of RITES on June 17 it will begin process of preparing DPR, which is expected to be completed by November.

In its report, RITES has proposed four routes in three corridors.

The total length of metro rail line has been proposed to be 57.5 km. The routes mentioned in the report are Cantonment railway station to Lanka via Rathyatra, Cantt station to Sarnath via Pandeypur, Mughalsarai to DLW via Cantt station and Babatpur to Kutchehri via Shivpur. The longest route of 22.5 km is of Mughalsarai to DLW via Cantt station.

VDA has also started efforts to search land for yard and workshop for the metro rail. The agency had initially surveyed Harahua area and later options were also explored in areas like Seer Gowardhan. The officials expected that the process of bringing metro rail project on floor may get momentum after proposed meeting on June 17.

Systra to design LMRC’s underground metro corridor

Lucknow (LKO):  French firm Systra in charge of designing Lucknow’s elevated metro track has been appointed as the detailed design consultant (DDC) of the underground metro corridor too. The construction of underground metro (3.5 km) from Charbagh to Hazratganj would begin in December, 2015.

LMRC board chaired by the chief secretary approved engagement of Systra to design the underground stations of Hussainganj, Sachivalaya and Hazratganj on Tuesday. LMRC said that Systra was already serving as DDC of elevated track (about 19 kms) of North-South corridor. “We have chosen one firm as the DDC for entire project so that there are no problems in coordination during construction of elevated and underground corridors”, said an LMRC official.

LMRC said since the project has to be completed in a tight time frame, it would be better to extend the contract of the existing DDC. His work would be to design civil, electrical and mechanical structures of the stations, corridor along the track. Following the Companies Act 2013, the board approved constitution of Investment and Audit committee of LMRC too.

Government had earlier asked LMRC to purchase private lands on mutual negotiation basis and had formed a committee to decide on rates. The board approved rates recommended by the committee for purchase of private lands on mutual negotiation basis too. LMRC said around 3 hectares of private land have to be purchased for metro project, out of which a majority (about 2.7 hectares) belongs to self-styled Godman, Asharam Bapu’s Ashram near the depot in Amausi. It said with board approving the rates, the land purchase process will speed up.

Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation works on Solutions to shift underground utilities within metro stretch

Lucknow (LKO): On his formal joining in the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) office, the new Managing Director of Lucknow Metro Kumar Keshav was in full gear working on the possible challenges of metro’s priority section from Transport Nagar to Charbagh railway station. He admitted that while most are worried about funding options, very less focus has been given on solutions to shift the underground utilities coming within metro stretch. Keshav is a former senior official from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

He spent the entire day inspecting the construction and depot site, identifying possible challenges and their solutions to meet a close approaching deadline of beginning construction by next month. He said, “None of the cities were planned to have metro as a public transport option in future. Lucknow is as congested as Delhi and the roads are much narrower. Public will face inconvenience during construction and we have to find ways to reduce their inconvenience.”
