Varanasi (BSB): Moving ahead in the direction of bringing metro rail project for bringing improvement in urban transportation system, Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) has submitted its inception-cum-options report to Varanasi Development Authority (VDA).
This report would be tabled during next meeting of VDA on June 17 to take further decision. The meeting will be chaired by the VDA chairman and managing director of Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) is also expected to participate.
VDA secretary M P Singh said on Wednesday that RITES has submitted its inception-cum-option report to VDA on proposed metro rail service in Varanasi. In the presence of VDA chairman and LMRC MD, the officials will go through the report in order to identify the routes on which this service should be introduced on priority. After deciding the route, RITES would be asked to prepare the detailed project report, after which the cost of project will be estimated.
Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had announced metro rail service to Varanasi in December 2014. After the approval of state cabinet to the proposal of metro rail, Varanasi Development Authority was appointed the nodal agency to initiate the project under the supervision of LMRC MD. For initial exercises like DPR preparation, a budget of Rs 3 crores was sanctioned.
If the officials approve the inception-cum-option report of RITES on June 17 it will begin process of preparing DPR, which is expected to be completed by November.
In its report, RITES has proposed four routes in three corridors.
The total length of metro rail line has been proposed to be 57.5 km. The routes mentioned in the report are Cantonment railway station to Lanka via Rathyatra, Cantt station to Sarnath via Pandeypur, Mughalsarai to DLW via Cantt station and Babatpur to Kutchehri via Shivpur. The longest route of 22.5 km is of Mughalsarai to DLW via Cantt station.
VDA has also started efforts to search land for yard and workshop for the metro rail. The agency had initially surveyed Harahua area and later options were also explored in areas like Seer Gowardhan. The officials expected that the process of bringing metro rail project on floor may get momentum after proposed meeting on June 17.
