Railways to appoint Senior Officials as Key Customer Managers: Mohd Jamsheed, MT

Railways to appoint Senior Officials as Key Customer Managers: Mohd Jamsheed, MT

New Delhi: As part of the exercise undertaken by the Indian Railways to improve freight revenue, key customer managers will shortly be appointed to cater to large customers such as public sector units, ministries and individual firms, said a top Railway Board official.

The national carrier will be appointing nine Key Customer Managers including five executive directors and four directors to cater to such customers who provide 10-20 million tonnes of traffic each. Railway minister Suresh Prabhu had announced this plan in his budget speech earlier this year.

Railways generate three-fifths of its revenue from freight volumes and earned Rs.9,777 crore from transporting 100 million tonnes of freight in March. The prominent commodities it transports include coal, food grains, cement, iron ore and fertilizer.

“They will be the nodal officers to look at specific group of people of that commodity. There will be four-five major customers under each officer who will look into their demands, requests and reforms of policies to reduce the level of officers they had to go through earlier,” said Mohammad Jamshed, Member Traffic, Railway Board, on Wednesday.

This comes in the backdrop of the National Democratic Alliance government working towards improving ease of doing business. A case in point being the Indian Railways withdrawing the dual freight policy for transportation of mineral and pellets to boost iron ore exports. As the new policy comes into effect starting Tuesday, freight rates for transportation of iron ore for domestic consumption and exports will be charged equally.

“Dual pricing of iron ore was very complicated,” said Jamshed.

“In the last two years, there was no demand and iron ore exports have come down to just about 2 million tonnes in the last two years…this is 2 million out of 1,100 million tonnes.

It was not making sense for traders to ply additional amount that was being levied for export of iron ore,” he added.

The railways had made a slew of announcement to improve its balance sheet. Last month, it decided to withdraw 10% port congestion surcharge and has also decided to withdraw the 15% busy season charge levied on all commodities for two months starting 1 May. Earlier this year, the carrier also reduced the standard parcel size of cement from 1,900 tonnes to around 1,200 tonnes.

Prabhu has also promised to increase the average speed of freight trains to 50km per hour and introduce time-tabled freight trains on a pilot basis.

Experts believe that the right decisions are now being taken.. “There were issues such as not being able to load a full rake, so single rake has been given the opportunity so it can be sent to more than one destination in the end. So we will get some more traffic from the roads as well as multiple customers can be handled by the same rake,” said former Railway Board Chiarman, Mr.Arunendra Kumar.

Cell Phone Coop Challenge by Chick-fil-A Restaurant

Cell Phone Coop Challenge by Chick-fil-A Restaurant

Chick-fil-A fast food restaurant has issued a challenge for its customers, which requires them to keep their phones aside while eating food at their restaurant. If the customer manages to stay from his phone during the entire meal, the restaurant will give free ice cream.

The challenge has been termed as ‘Cell Phone Coop Challenge’ and the customers are required to keep their electronics in a wired box of white color, called coop, and are not allowed to take them while having their meal.

The idea of this challenge was given by Brad Williams, an operator of Chick-fil-A in Georgia. He stated that the purpose of the challenge is to offer customers a sense of community, so that they can spend some quality time with their friends and family.

“But as we all know, technology increasingly demands more of our time and can be a big distraction, even while we’re eating. This got me thinking about what we could do to reduce this distraction during meals,” said Williams.

With this aim in mind, Williams, along with his team, developed the idea of Coop Challenge, which is now being followed by over 150 outlets of the restaurant. A 2015 Informate Mobile Intelligence study revealed that every day, 4.7 hours on an average are spent by the Americans on phones.

The data reveals that several people find it difficult to keep phones on the dinner table, but the notions are changing with every passing generation. The Center for the Digital Future revealed that individuals born after 1982 disagree with the above notion.

The small, square box is kept on every table and diners are required to put their cell phones in it after putting them on silent. If the phone doesn’t come out of the ‘Cell Phone Coop’, then everyone gets a free ice cream. The habit of using cell phones has serious adverse consequences on social life, irrespective of age, gender, ethnicity and mood.

Reliance Jio foray: BSNL to launch 4G services, unveil competitive tariff plans

'We will launch competitive tariff plans to match Reliance Jio and other private telecom service providers’ pricing, be it 4G or 3G, by the end of this year'

NEW DELHI: State-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited plans to unveil cheaper tariff plans by the end of this year and launch full-fledged 4G services by March 2016 to take on private players including Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio Infocomm.

"We will launch competitive tariff plans to match Reliance Jio and other private telecom service providers' pricing, be it 4G or 3G, by the end of this year," BSNL chairman-cum-managing director Anupam Shrivastava told ET.

BSNL will close watch Jio, which has announced launch of 4G services by the end of the year, and it will use airwaves in 2500 Mhz band to launch competitively priced 4G services at select locations before the end of current fiscal, Shrivastava said.

Jio, in addition to pan-India BWA spectrum in 2300 MHz band, has acquired airwaves in 800MHz and 1800MHz in the recently-concluded auctions. Ambani had earlier announced that the company will launch services around December at tariffs ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 500 per month.

Shrivastava further said, "We are taking Wi-Fi route for our 4G services and also talking to telecom operators for spectrum sharing."

Wi-Fi technology connects through 2G or 3G network and acts as a 4G hotspot to delivers high-speed data services to consumers.

"We have spectrum in 2.5 Ghz across 15 Licensed Service Areas (LSAs) in the country and we are planning to launch 4G services by the end of the current fiscal year," the BSNL top executive said.

BSNL's discussions with Russia's MTS India arm, which has spectrum in 800 MHz band, have however not materialized, Shrivastava said.
The state-run operator is also evaluating device-bundling options for 4G services and is currently in talks with various device manufacturers for consumer-friendly schemes.

"We compete with each other and share infrastructure with Reliance Jio as well. In today's scenario, it should not be seen as a competition as the objective is to serve consumers," Shrivastava said.

In 2014, Jio had entered into a pact with BSNL for telecom infrastructure sharing and is currently using the state-run operator's 4,000 mobile towers.

As a part of its revival strategy, BSNL, which has the largest 3G footprint in the country, is looking at aggressive marketing plans and also boosting broadband internet speed of all data plans staring at Rs 545 to 2 Mbps from October 1.

It has recently started free night calling facility between 9 pm and 7 am to all operators and free incoming on roaming, which, according to the company, is helping in growing its subscriber base.

BSNL is the only operator to offer free incoming calls while roaming, Shrivastava said.

He said the company added 16 lakh new customers in July and 15 lakh in August due to mobile number portability.

SBI to increase number of customer service points

SBI to increase number of customer service points

Anticipating tougher competition after RBI granted payments banking licences to 11 entities, State Bank of India (SBI) on Friday said it will increase the number of its Customer Service Points (CSP) to assert its position in the rural unbanked segment.

"We are seeing a lot of competition," SBI chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya said at a FICCI Banking Conclave here.

She said that while full-fledged or universal banks were ahead of payments banks (PBs) in terms of service, size of remittance handled and other factors, the PBs would be ahead of the universal banks when it came to their reach in rural households.

"PBs will have better access in the rural unbanked segment and so we are also coming up with a low-cost model to service the unbanked segment," she said.

According to her, setting up a bank in a rural place involved numerous costs while the cost could be pared down through the CSP route.

Bhattacharya said the PBs would handle small remittances and reach out to rural customers, these financial institutions would be of limited help to regular customers.

"The PBs are also not interested in credit history as they cannot offer loans. It makes more sense to use full-fledged banks to build the credit history," she said.

The SBI chairperson referred to the importance of the credit history in developed countries.

"In the developed world, without a credit card, you don't exist. Without it, you can't do a thing," Bhattacharya said.

In West Bengal, the SBI would add 500 CSPs in rural panchayats which don't have access to banking facilities.
