Railways "All Passenger Services " on One Mobile App

From Booking Tickets To Ordering Meals, All-In-One Railways App Soon

NEW DELHI:  A seamless travel experience for rail commuters with a swipe of a finger is in the offing as Railways plans to revamp its mobile application and include "all passenger services" for its customers.

"We are preparing an integrated mobile application for railway passengers which will take care of all their needs."

"It will be an app that will take care of the entire journey -- from booking a ticket to booking a taxi, pre-ordering a meal, requesting for porter services, lodging at a retiring room, ordering a bed roll, complaining about lack of cleanliness in a coach, accessing digital entertainment, reserving a hotel, booking an airline ticket in case of a waitlisted rail ticket, among other services,"said an official from the Non-Fare Directorate of the Railway Ministry.

Ernst and Young, which has drafted this proposal for the Railways, intends to enhance the application in three stages by the end of which it plans to provide access to medical facilities, connect a passenger to police in case of an emergency and even assist with parking at railway stations.

It is expected that this initiative, which is part of railways' move to monetise its digital assets, will fetch up to Rs. 500 crores annually.

The Railway Ministry hopes that in this manner it will be able to augment its "non-fare revenue", which is less than 5 per cent of the total revenue earned by it. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in his budget speech earlier this year had envisaged raising this to at least 10-20 per cent by monetising soft assets.

Will hike auto, taxi fares based on Hakim panel report

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government today informed the Bombay High Court that taxi and autorickshaw fares would be increased based on the recommendation of the now-scrapped Hakim Committee till the newly set up committee submits its report.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Road Transport Authority (MMRTA) had on May 11 proposed a hike in the basic fare for autorickshaws and taxis based on the recommendation of the erstwhile Hakim Committee. The minimum fare for autos is expected to go up from Rs 17 to Rs 18 while taxi fare is likely to go up from the minimum Rs 21 to Rs 22.

The state government had earlier approached the high court seeking approval for the proposed hike. The court’s approval is required as a PIL was earlier filed by consumer body Mumbai Grahak Panchayat challenging the recommendations of the Hakim committee.

Government pleader Abhinandan Vagyani today told a division bench headed by Justice N H Patil that till the new committee headed by a retired high court judge does not submit its report, the government has decided to go ahead with the hike in fares based on the Hakim committee recommendation.

“From June 25 recalibration of the electronic meters of autos and taxis will start. Once the recalibration process is over the fare hike will be in place,” Vagyani said.

The court has posted the matter for further hearing tomorrow. Meanwhile, the court today adjourned till June 29 a petition filed by the Mumbai Grahak Panchayat seeking contempt action against the taxi and autorickshaw unions for resorting to strike on June 15 and 17 in the city.

Taxi and autoriskshaw drivers had gone on strike to seek implementation of the proposed hike in fares and against scrapping of a one-man committee which recommended the hike. The contempt petition contended that the high court had passed an order in August 2013 observing that taxi and auto unions should not threaten to go on strike time and again.

Court directs Railways to monitor premium car parking at Chennai Central

Railways tells court that a contract for a parking lot to accommodate 61 cars has been awarded.

The Madras High Court on Monday directed the Railways to monitor the premium car parking at Chennai Central Railway Station with its personnel, till a vendor to manage the parking is finalised.

When a petition came up for hearing before the First Bench comprising Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, counsel for Railways produced a document, which stated that a contract for a parking lot to accommodate 61 cars has been awarded.

As for premium car parking to accommodate 48 cars, the tender was to be opened on June 22, he said and assured the court that the tender would be finalised in one month thereafter.

“In the meantime, we direct that qua this premium car parking, the Railways should make arrangements through their own personnel to monitor the same. The Railways can compensate itself by collecting the charges for the premium car parking. Needless to say, the concerned police authorities would render all assistance at the site,” the Bench said.

Petitioner K. Sudhan in his petition sought separate parking lots for private or owner-driven cars and further permit parking of call taxis, tourist cabs and autos only in the designated area.

He also sought to ensure that call taxis, tourist cabs, autos and other categories of commercial vehicles are not allowed to remain stationary for any reason in any part of the railway station.

The petitioner sought a direction to authorities to take action against those who illegally control the car park area.
