EASTERN RAILWAY TO RUN MORE HOLI SPECIAL TRAINS

To cater to the rush of passengers  on  the occasion of HOLI festival , Eastern Railway will run sixteen ( 16 ) more special trains  --  two Holi special trains each between Howrah & Kamakhya, Howrah & Gorakhpur, Howrah-Raxaul-Asansol, Asansol & Patna,  four trains between Malda & Anand Vihar and two Janasadharan Special trains each between Howrah & Raxaul and Howrah & Anand Nagar.
02257 Up Howrah – Kamakhya Holi Special (via-Dankuni) will start from Howrah station at 23:05 hrs. o­n 11.3.2017 and reach Kamakhya station at 19:30 hrs. o­n the next day, while the corresponding down train (02258 Dn) leaving Kamakhya at 23:45 hrs. o­n 12.3.2017 will arrive at Howrah at 19:30 hrs. next day. This train will have Air Conditioned & Sleeper Class accommodations.
03131 Up Howrah – Gorakhpur Holi Special  (via-Dankuni) will start from Howrah station at 23:55 hrs. o­n 8.3.2017 and reach Gorakhpur station  at 17:30 hrs. o­n the next day, while the corresponding down train (03132 Dn) leaving Gorakhpur at 19:05 hrs. o­n 9.3.2017 will arrive at Howrah station  at 12:40 hrs. next day.
03429 Up Malda-Anand Vihar Holi Special (via-Sultanpur) will start from Malda Town station at 9:05 hrs. o­n 20.3.2017 & 27.3.2017 and reach Anand Vihar  station  at 14:20 hrs. o­n next days, while the corresponding down train (03430 Dn)  leaving Anand Vihar station at 17:10 hrs. o­n 21.3.2017 & 28.3.2017 will arrive at Malda Town station  at 23:50 hrs. o­n next days.
03039 Up/ 03040 Dn  Howrah – Raxaul - Asansol  Holi Special (via-Dankuni) will start from Howrah station at 15:00 hrs. o­n 10.3.2017 and reach Raxaul  station at 10:00 hrs. o­n the next day, while in return journey leaving Raxaul station  at 12:00 hrs. o­n 11.3.2017 this train will terminate at Asansol station at 23:45 hrs. o­n the same day
These trains will have Air Conditioned, Sleeper Class & General Second Class accommodations.
03575 Up/03576 Dn Asansol – Patna Holi Special train leaving  Asansol & Patna stations at 7:15 hrs. & 15:10 hrs. o­n 12.3.2017 will reach Patna & Asansol stations at 14:00 hrs. & 22:00 hrs. respectively o­n the same day. This train will have Second Class reserved & un-reserved accommodations.
Janasadharan Holi Special trains:
ER has arranged Howrah-Raxaul & Howrah-Anand Nagar Janasadharan Holi special trains having all unreserved General Second Class coaches.
03041 Up/ 03042 Dn  Howrah- Raxaul-Howrah Janasadharan  Holi Special (via-Bandel) will start from Howrah station at 22:50 hrs. o­n 9.3.2017 and reach Raxaul  station at 16:05 hrs. o­n the next day, while in return journey leaving Raxaul station  at 19:45 hrs. o­n 10.3.2017 this train will arrive at Howrah station at 12:15 hrs. next day
03067 Up/ 03068 Dn  Howrah – Anand Nagar-Howrah Janasadharan  Holi Special will start from Howrah station at 22:50 hrs. o­n 11.3.2017 and reach Anand Nagar  station at 21:10 hrs. o­n the next day, while in return journey leaving Anand Nagar station  at 00:45 hrs. o­n 13.3.2017 this train will arrive at Howrah station at 20:15 hrs. o­n  the same day.
It may be mentioned that, ER has already declared earlier 6 other special trains for Holi Festival of which 4 will run between Howrah & Muzaffarpur and 2 between Sealdah & Kamakhya.

First mountain railway in the country that came up with the rack and pinion system

Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) completed 106 years and chugged into its 107th year on October 15, also observed as NMR Day. Passengers were greeted with flowers and sweets on the occasion and there was even a cake to mark the special day. The NMR acquired a world heritage status awarded to it by UNESCO in 2005.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway Day was celebrated at the Udhagamandalam railway station with K. Natarajan (left), founder of Heritage Steam Chariot Trust, welcoming the tourists on ThursdayNMR is the first mountain railway in the country that came up with the rack and pinion system. The rack and pinion system is used to cover the steep gradient the train chugs through in its journey from Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam.

The journey starts at 1,069 ft above Mean Sea Level and travels up to a height of 7,228 ft. The rack and pinion system begins a little after Kallar station and goes up to Coonoor.

The line between Mettupalayam and Coonoor was first laid in 1898 and then it was extended up to Udhagamandalam in 1908. NMR has had Swiss x locomotives and then refurbished engines from the Golden Rock Workshop in Tiruchirapalli; it has travelled a long way from the steam fired engines using coal to the latest furnace oil fired locomotives that haul the mountain train.

In its 100 odd years of existence, the mountain railway has had its share of woes. Bridges and tracks have been washed away, landslides have disrupted its journeys and it has been considered economically unsound. But, the tracks were always restored as soon as possible after natural calamities and railway ministry or the board has always intervened to stem any talk of discontinuation of the NMR and ensure its continued services at any cost.

On Thursday, at a function organised by the Heritage Steam Chariot Trust at Udhagamandalam, founder of the trust K. Natarajan, former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission M.R. Srinivasan and Nilgiris District Collector P. Shankar greeted the tourists who arrived by the train and congratulated them for having chosen to travel on a day of historic significance to the NMR.
