Safety Audit begins in Dindigul-Tiruchi section

Railway officials say it’s a route inspection to ensure passenger safety

Dindigul (DG): A special safety audit team from Southern Railway, Chennai, led by Chief Safety Officer John Thomas, checked safety aspects in major stations and level crossings in Dindigul-Tiruchi section on Wednesday.

Talking to press persons before commencing the work at Dindigul railway station, Mr. Thomas said that the main purpose of the inspection was to ensure safety of passengers.

Safety audits were being conducted regularly by a multi-disciplinary team of railway officers to ensure implementation of all rules and guidelines for safe operation of trains.

“We will inspect stations, bridges, level crossings, signal cabins, accident relief trains, pit lines, running rooms, loco sheds, points and crossings and derailment-prone sections. Such periodical inspections served as an important tool to evaluate safety performance and to identify system failures and general shortcomings,” he added.

The railway officials said that the safety audit team would submit its report to the zonal railways which, in turn, would forward it to the Railway Board.

These reports would help the Board issue necessary safety instructions when required.

Later, the team inspected the signal cabin and asked the officials what their requirements were and whether they used advanced electronic tracking system provided to Dindigul railway station.

They also inquired about additional signal system on formation of additional tracks on platform 1 which is under construction.Railway Station Manager K. Mariappan accompanied the team. The team completed its inspection up to Manaparai in the evening.

Earlier, the team had a meeting with Divisional Railway Manager Sunil Kumar Garg, and other officers at Madurai divisional office. Senior officers from Safety, Engineering, Traffic and Signal and Telecommunications wings were the other members of the audit team.

On Tuesday evening, the team had inspected Madurai-Dindigul section, including Kodai Road and Ambathurai stations.
