DMRC: Metro Services in Yellow Line Poor run with a Power Supply Snag

New Delhi: In continuation of its recent poor run, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation faltered yet again today with a power supply snag hitting the Yellow Line, delaying train movement along the North-South corridor.

Train services were hit from around 12 PM to 12.40 PM due to failure of power supply from Delhi Transco (DTL) to DMRC’s substations located at Kashmere Gate and Jahangirpuri, leading to tripping of Over Head Electrification (OHE) two to three times, a Delhi Metro official said.

Services were affected between Central Secretariat and Samaypur Badli stations of the corridor. However, the cascading effect could be felt along the entire line due to bunching effect, he said.

On the other hand, interlocking issue between Jahangirpuri and Model Town stations hindered the setting of routes and providing target speed to trains, thereby affecting the services further.

“Two trains were short looped from Viswavidyalaya to HUDA City Centre in this period to minimise the impact on rest of the section,” the official said.

The 48-km-long Yellow Line (line 2), one of the busiest, connects north Delhi’s Samaypur Badli to Huda City Centre of Gurgaon passing through the walled city and south Delhi.

A spate of glitches have hit DMRC’s Blue Line in the recent past, prompting the Centre to seek a detailed report on the same.

DMRC starts Trial Run on Jahangirpuri-Samaypur Badli Metro Rail corridor

New Delhi: Literally hopping over the busy Northern Railway tracks and a PWD flyover along the Outer Ring Road, a first Metro train ran across the new extension of Yellow Line from Jahangirpuri till Samaypur Badli which held its first safety trials on Friday.

The 4.392-km extension will directly connect HUDA City Centre with Samaypur Badli by extending the existing Yellow Line beyond Jahangirpuri. The construction work for this elevated stretch, part of the Phase-III of the network, is almost complete and is expected to be opened for commuters after successful trials and mandatory approvals, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said.

Starting from Jahangirpuri, there would be three stations on the stretch — Badli Mor, Rohini Sector 18 and Samaypur Badli, serving residents of North Delhi areas such as Jahangirpuri, Samaypur, Badli, Transport Nagar, GT Karnal Road and parts of Rohini.

Talking about the challenges involved in the construction of this new stretch, Metro officials said it required close coordination with various agencies, including Railways and the PWD, as the line had to go over a railway track as well as an under-construction flyover. A 45-m-long steel span made out of 200 metric tonnes of steel had to be used to make it possible for trains to cross the Delhi-Ambala section of the Northern Railway and the flyover.

“Since the PWD is also constructing flyover on the Outer Ring Road, there is one common pier for the Metro alignment and the flyover, which is unqiue,” a project engineer said.

The elevated station that has come up at Badli Mor is also massive in size. With four levels, as it has been built in a way to make it possible to handle the load of two platforms, catering to Phase-III and also Phase-IV. In Phase-IV, it will become an interchange station with the proposed RK Ashram, Mukundpur-Janakpuri (West) section.

Departing from convention of rather monotonous colour schemes of other stations, the DMRC has given a colourful outlook to the new station as it was located in a largely industrial area, said a metro official

Delhi Metro to start Trials on 4.39 Km Badli Yellow Line Extension

New Delhi: The countdown has started for Delhi Metro’s arrival in outer Delhi. On Friday, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will start trials on the 4.39 km extension of the Yellow line to Badli.

The extension will make commuting easier for lakhs of people living in areas like Badli, GT Karnal Road and Transport Nagar who otherwise had to change multiple rides to get to the heart of the capital.

“Construction of this elevated 4.3km stretch is almost complete and it will be opened to public after successful trials and mandatory approvals”, said a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesman. The extension on the corridor (HUDA City Centre-Jahangirpuri) will have stations at Badli Mor, Rohini Sector-18 and Samaypur Badli. With this stretch, the total length of the corridor will increase to 49km.

The Jahangirpuri-Badli corridor is also crucial because one station—Badli Mor—is expected to become an interchange station on phase-IV of the Metro network. It will be made an interchange link with the proposed R K Ashram- Mukundpur-Janakpuri (West) section which will connect Yellow line with line 7 (Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar) and line 8 (Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden) that are being constructed as part of phase-III. However, the corridor is yet to be approved by Delhi government.

“The foundations and structures of the station have been designed in such a way that they will be able to take the load of the two platforms catering to phase-III and phase-IV,” said a senior DMRC official.

Interestingly, the Jahangirpuri-Badli line is also one of the few Metro corridors going over a railway line in Delhi. To span the Northern Railway tracks of the Delhi-Ambala route, Delhi Metro has constructed a special steel bridge. It has also constructed two separate elevated tracks for this corridor—for the “up” and “down” lines. DMRC has crossed the railway tracks by constructing a 45m-span steel bridge on both lines.

Once trial runs on this extension of the Yellow line are successful, Delhi Metro will apply for the necessary clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) before opening the line for commercial use.
