Southern Railway Passengers Can Book Unreserved Railway Tickets at Reservation Counter(IUTS)

Southern Railway Passengers Can Book Unreserved Railway Tickets at Reservation Counter(IUTS)

Integrated Unreserved Ticketing System at 138 stations launched on Southern Railway

CHENNAI: For speedy access of ticketing facilities and optimum utilisation of railway resources, Southern Railway (SR) has launched Integrated Unreserved Ticketing System (IUTS), merging both unreserved ticket counters and reserved ticket counters, at 138 stations in six divisions in Tamil Nadu and Kerala recently.

This means passengers will be able to purchase reserved tickets at unreserved ticket counters between 8 am and 8 pm at select stations in Madurai, Tiruchy and Salem divisions, while reserved ticket counters will also sell unreserved tickets during peak hours in Chennai division, said railway sources.

According to official records, the zone has 566 unreserved ticket counters across Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchy, Salem, Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad divisions, while it has only 121 reserved ticket counters. Though SR operates 74 additional counters for booking reserved tickets — 45 at non rail head (NRH) locations, 20 at post offices and nine Yatri Ticket Suvidha Kendra (YTSK) counters operated by private agencies, it could not cater to demand.

Though more than 55 per cent of reserved tickets are booked through IRCTC, a section of passengers still wanted to purchase through counters. “Trains bound for southern Tamil Nadu has huge ticket demand and railways is unable to provide dedicated PRS counters for many stations in Madurai and Tiruchy divisions. So we have merged both UTS and PRS counters together at many stations in Tiruchy and Madurai division in the last two months,” said a senior railway official.

Of the 116 UTS counters, an UTS counter at each of 40 stations, including Pamban, Madurai East, Mettur and Kizhapuliyur railway stations, has been earmarked as IUTS counter for performing the dual role in Madurai division. As many as 28 counters out of 110 counters were converted as unified counters across Tiruchy division, while 18 counters were upgraded in Salem division. All the counters were upgraded in C, D and E category stations.

“Chennai division has limited demand for reservation counters. Six counters at Villivakkam, Puttur, Nayudupetta, Ekambarakuppam, Gudiyatham and Vaniyambadi have been selling both unreserved tickets and reserved tickets,” the official said.

The integrated ticketing system will enable railways to serve passengers without increasing manpower and creating additional infrastructure.  However, the railways said that functioning of the counters will depend on passenger patronage at the particular station.

“When smaller stations had passage of express and passenger trains, the ticketing staff has been directed to sell only unreserved tickets. During Tatkal hours, the counter staff will cater to passengers who want to purchase reserved tickets,” an officer explained.

Plan to open rail ticket counters in 50 post offices awaits nod

Plan to open rail ticket counters in 50 post offices awaits nod

CHENNAI, November 5, 2016

Proposals to open Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters in about 50 post offices across the State is awaiting the nod from Southern Railway for nearly two years now.

The Postal Department began offering services to book railway tickets in post offices back in 2013. As of now, there are 34 such PRS counters in post offices across the State. Of this, eight are in the Chennai city region, including the post offices at IIT Madras, Shastri Bhavan.

Officials said the department tied with the Southern Railway to take the service to customers living in areas which do not have easy access to such facilities. However, proposals sent to the Southern Railway, during the course of past two years, are still pending.

Some of the significant proposals to open PRS counters are in Anna Road head post office, Chennai and Tiruchi Airport post office. “We identify places which are far away from the railway stations or other PRS booking centres,” said J.T. Venkateswarulu, postmaster general (mails and business development).

Nearly 1.35 lakh transactions, including cancellation of tickets, were carried out in the past six months. The Postal Department earned a revenue of nearly Rs. 21 lakh through the PRS counters during this period.

More counters would help customers, particularly in rural and semi urban areas who still prefer to book tickets through PRS counters, officials said.

Southern Railway officials said that, at present, PRS centres were functioning in 30 locations across Tamil Nadu. Some proposals for setting up PRS counters in post offices were pending as they were awaiting equipment. However, sources also said they were not keen on opening such PRS counters in more post offices, immediately, as it did not fetch much revenue to the Southern Railway, especially in urban areas.

With the increase of online booking through IRCTC, authorised agents and mobile applications, there were also queries from within the Railway administration about the need to open such booking counters, especially in spaces where revenue is not bound to be on the high side, sources said.

SRM Travels Tickets Distributed By e-post,a MOU signed with Postal Department

Chennai (MAS): A love hate relationship of Chennaites with Metro Rail has not left untouched the Postal Department, which appears to be well aware of the project getting into the imagination of the city’s denizens. So much so that the inauguration of Metro Rail, expected shortly, is likely to be accompanied by a special cover from the Department.

Newly-appointed Chief Postmaster General for Tamil Nadu Circle, Charles Bolo, said a special cover would certainly be released to mark the occasion. “We know how important it is. The special cover will be a limited edition one and made a collector’s item of high value. We are to consult with the state government and Metro Rail authorities on how best to release it,” he said.

“We are thinking of several ways of releasing it like issuing to all the commuters on the first Metro Rail ride. The cover will be date stamped at the beginning of the journey and cancelled at the end. This will make them unique and a true collector’s item,” he added.

The Department of Posts in TN is also looking at releasing two other special covers this financial year – one on Mylapore Luz Church and the other on SanThome Basilica. The Luz church cover will mark the 500th anniversary of the Church, built by the Portuguese in 1516. Named the Nossa Senhora da Luz initially, it is now called the Church of Our Lady of Light.

On other business, Lobo said the Department would consider expanding its services in other sectors too, like e-commerce and travel bookings. A recent MoU with leading travel operator SRM Travels would see the Department sell tickets for the same across several e-Post office centres. “2500 officers have been selected for this purpose and will handle it, apart from their other duties,” he added.

Permission requested to open a counter in the post office at Naugaon

Post offices will be utilized for Railway Reservations

Bhopal (Bureau): In today’s changing times, the usage of Letters and Magazines are reduced, and the role of a Post office is also changing. The Railways have started a campaign to open reservation counters at post offices. Including the hill stations of Pachmarhi and Amarkantak, in Madhya Pradesh nearly one and half a dozen Municipal towns have been provisioned with this facility. Even though there is no railway station in Naugaon (Chattarpur), the exercise of opening a reservation counter has been speeded up. The railways have started a campaign to open reservation counters in various cities, villages and towns of Madhya Pradesh, where most of the locations don’t even have train facilities. This facility has already been started in nearly one and half a dozen small cities. In 2014, reservation counters were opened in Post offices of ten cities. This year also the railways have selected a few cities, among which the first would be Naugaon village in Chattarpur district for which preparations have already started. In this regard, officers from the Jhansi rail division have visited Bhopal on   Wednesday and had a long discussion with the officers of the Postal Department.

Director General of Postal services has shown a green flag
Director General of Postal services has granted approval for Naugaon. As soon as Railway provides logistics, software and lines, the counters will be started. As on today, people have to travel to Jhansi or nearby cities for reservation.

Counters are running here: In 2014, railways have opened counters in the post offices of Shahpur, Raisen, Chhindwara, Amarkantak, Baitul, Central TT Nagar Bhopal, Bhopal GPO, Baihar, Bhainsdehi and Pachmarhi. At first, the post office of Neemuch was utilized in 2009, following which in 2011 reservation counters were opened in the post offices of Pitampur and Manawar, Rajgarh (byawra), Maheshwar, Dindori and Sarni.

Appreciations received from Delhi and Mumbai but no one yet approached for Help
The High Tech helpline setup by the Madhya Pradesh Railway Police for Crime control received appreciation from Delhi, Mumbai, Punjab, etc; but no one has approached for help in regard to crime activities in the last five days. Officers simulated theft of Laptops and bags and raised complaints themselves in order to check the efficiency of the Police and recorded their response time. The main characteristic of this helpline is that, on receipt of information the railway police will initiate the exercise of reaching the culprit within 5 seconds.  Four days back, the Railway Police have launched a mobile application in the name GRP Helpline. This would facilitate help in case of any problems while travelling by train anywhere in the country.
