GPS based Display Boards in Trains

Indian Railways have planned to install GPS based Passenger Information System (PIS) on important mail/express trains in about 300 rakes in a phased manner. At present, GPS based Passenger Information System is installed only in Gatiman Express.

This Press Release is based on information given by the Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha on 03.08.2016 (Wednesday).

China competes with Siemens AG, Bombardier and Kawasaki for Global Rail Contracts

Shanghai: China is competing with Germany’s Siemens AG, Canada’s Bombardier Inc and Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd for global rail contracts – the same companies that helped it build a high-speed rail network that is now the world’s longest at 16,000 kilometres.

China began testing the first bullet train completely made from locally produced parts this week as part of a big government-led push to export railway technology.

China is also home to the world’s largest train maker by sales, CRRC Corp Ltd , which was formed when the government merged its two biggest train makers in June.

“The new train, with our full intellectual property rights, will facilitate our efforts to export China’s railway products and technologies,” said He Huawu, Chief Engineer of Railway operator China Railway Corp.

Foreign firms currently supply some of the parts that go into Chinese-made bullet trains, such as traction systems, analysts say.

The Chinese prototypes that are made from all-local parts have an operational speed of 350 km/hour and a top speed of 400 km/hour and, if successful, the trains will gradually replace older models currently in use, the paper added.

Earlier this year, a $3.75 billion tender that was initially won by a Chinese consortium to build tracks and supply bullet trains to Mexico was scrapped by the Mexican government.

Railways to spend INR 55 Crore to provide WiFi in important trains: But when?

New Delhi: Indian Railways has proposed to introduce Wi-Fi facility at A1 and A category stations and in 50 rakes of important trains, like Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duranto, reports the Press Information Bureau. Indian Railways had already introduced WiFi facility in 3 rakes of Howrah-New Delhi-Howrah Rajdhani Express as a pilot project, in April 2013 after initially announcing it in February 2011.

For this pilot project Eastern Railway has apparently spent Rs.6.67 crore. For the proposed introduction of Wi-Fi facility in other Rajdhani trains and in Shatabdi and Duranto category of trains an estimated budget of Rs.55 crore has been fixed. Also, it seems the Northern Railway has already been provided Rs.1 crore in the current financial year to begin executing this.

RailTel Corporation of Indian Limited (RailTel) – a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, will provide the Wi-Fi facility in stations through independent internet service providers (ISPs), with no investment on part of the Railways. Back in 2006 and again in 2008-09, RailTel notified that it plans to create Wi-Fi hotspots in 500 stations and also extend the service to the neighbouring areas.  Eight years have passed but next to no progress on this front.
