Gujarat: Gandhinagar Railway Station to get grand 450-room hotel

The railways are all set to develop a grand 450-room hotel in Gandhinagar Railway Station that will be on similar lines or even bigger than Delhi's iconic Maurya Sheraton and Taj Palace luxury hotels.
With the Centre's big push for redevelopment of railway stations to generate revenue, Indian Railways has taken the first step in the direction in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state, Gujarat. The railways are all set to develop a grand 450-room hotel in Gandhinagar Railway Station that will be on similar lines or even bigger than Delhi's iconic Maurya Sheraton and Taj Palace luxury hotels.
Railway officials said the proposed hotel at the railway station would be the first of its kind in India and abroad. The idea is to tap railways' resources to generate maximum revenue. The Indian Railway Station Development Corporation (IRSDC), a joint venture of IRCON and Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), has been assigned the task of developing two world class railway stations in Gujarat. The other station is Surat, where railways will be developing a multi-modal transportation hub.
The IRSDC will be inviting global players to develop the hotel at Gandhinagar Station. Senior officials said a pre-bid conference was held last month while another conference will be held on April 11, following which the bidding process will formally start. "So far several private players have expressed keen interest in the project. It will be a 400-450 room hotel that will essentially cater to the large number of visitors coming to Mahatma Mandir and Helipad Exhibition Centre, the two convention centres in Gandhinagar," said SK Lohia, Chief Executive Officer, IRSDC.
Sources in the Railway Ministry said significance of the project can be gauged from the fact that the development is being monitored by the Prime Minister's Office. Fortnightly meetings are being held at the Chief Secretary level in Gujarat to keep the project on fast track, they said. The last date for submission of Expression of Interest (EoI) is April 22. "The status of the project was also assessed by the Chief Secretary of Gujarat. The draft MoU is under approval of the authority," officials said.

28 STATIONS OF WESTERN RAILWAY SELECTED FOR REDEVELOPMENT

The passengers of Western Railway in near future, can hop into a posh restaurant, relax in a special lounge room, take pleasure in recreational activities or enjoy shopping with their favourite brands at 28 nominated railway stations, if the decision of the Union Cabinet will be implemented soon. For this purpose, six A – 1 category stations and 22 A category stations of W.Rly has been identified. 

The A – 1 category stations consists of Mumbai Central (Main), Bandra Terminus, Surat, Vadodara, Ahmedabad and Rajkot, whereas, A category stations comprises of Anand, Ankleshwar, Bharuch, Bhavnagar Terminus, Chittorgarh Jn., Gandhidham, Indore, Jamnagar, Mahesana, Nadiad, Nagda, Navsari, New Bhuj, Palanpur, Ratlam, Surendranagar, Udhana, Ujjain, Valsad, Vapi, Veraval and Viramgam.

In the Union Cabinet Meeting held recently, chaired by Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, Cabinet has provided its approval for redevelopment of more than 400 railway stations o­n 'as is where is' basis, through open invitation from interested parties with their designs and business ideas including permitting commercial development of real estate by the Zonal Railways. ‘A-1’ and ‘A’ category stations (about 400) shall be offered for redevelopment by inviting open bids from interested parties. These stations are to be developed by leveraging real estate development of land and air space in and around the stations.

This approval will enable the Ministry of Railways to accelerate the redevelopment of ‘A-1’ and ‘A’ category stations. These category of stations are generally located in metros, major cities, pilgrimage centres and important tourist destinations across the country. It will also encourage innovative ideas from interested parties at no cost to the Railways. Redevelopment of identified stations is undertaken through the Indian Stations Development Corporation Ltd. (IRSDC). As the IRSDC is able to undertake redevelopment of o­nly a few stations, and there is a need to redevelop a large number of stations, it has been proposed to redevelop stations through invitation of open bids from interested parties.

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today gave its approval for redevelopment of railway stations on 'as is where is' basis, through open invitation from interested parties with their designs and business ideas including permitting commercial development of real estate by the Zonal Railways.

Background:

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF RAILWAYS (SHRI MANOJ SINHA)  Replied  

(a) & (b): It has been decided to undertake prefeasibility studies regarding redevelopment of Bhubaneswar or New Bhubaneswar and Baiyyappanahalli (Bengaluru) stations through the Chinese Railway Construction Engineering Group, at their cost, under an MoU signed between Indian Railways and National Railway Administration, Government of the People’s Republic of China on 18.9.2014. Preliminary information has been exchanged between China Railway Construction Engineering Group and Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation Ltd. (IRSDC) in this regard.
