Railways ready to tackle extremist activities on tracks
Mughal Sarai (MGS): East Central Railway (ECR) is fully geared up to tackle extremists’ threat to railway tracks in the Maoist-dominated districts of Bihar, Mughalsarai DRM Vidya Bhushan said today. Admitting that extremists have several times in the past executed destructive plans, the Indian Railways are committed to stop the Naxal-nuisance on railway tracks. “We have made elaborate plan to prevent extemist activity on rail tracks”, he added.
He said in all stations falling under Mughalsarai division, night-patrolling of rail tracks by railway employees have been put in place. “At every railway station a keyman and a patrolling man regularly undertake patrolling of tracks. They have been given a special type of mobile phone and SIM card, free of network hassles”, Mr Bhushan added.
He noted that railwaymen on night patrol are in a position to communicate through SMS or voice log any kind of activity on railway tracks to their superiors. “Many a times we have been able to avert destructive activity on railway tracks on information provided by night patrol”, he stated.
Thanks to development of technology, now even the control room can get in touch with patrol persons whenever required, the DRM pointed out.
“One benefit of the system is that the railwaymen present at the nearest location can rush to the trouble spot and do the needful”, he added.

Patna: Concerned over frequent mishaps at unmanned gates under the East Central Railway (ECR), railways has decided to further improve safety measures at both manned and unmanned railway crossing gates under the five divisions of the zone. According to ECR GM Madhuresh Kumar, railways would tap solar energy for adequate lights at both manned and unmanned railway crossing gates in the zone.
“Railways has identified the most ‘critical unmanned gates’ in ECR. Proper lights could avert mishaps on tracks at unmanned gates during night,” GM Kumar said. Under the new plan, the ECR is likely to engage people for intensive counselling to semi-literate or illiterate people in remote areas about the need to follow safety measures while crossing unmanned railway gates, he said, adding safety awareness is a must for every person for crossing both manned and unmanned gates.
ECR GM has urged vehicle owners, drivers, motorists and pedestrians to cross unmanned gates looking at both ends of the tracks. This practice could avert major mishaps on tracks at the crossings, Kumar said.

ECR GM inspects ongoing ‘Munger Ganga Setu’ Rail-cum-Road over bridge works
Munger: General Manager of East Central Railway (ECR) Mr.Madhuresh Kumar on Wednesday inspected the ongoing work on rail cum road bridge over the Ganga at Munger. A team of railway officials, including Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), construction, L.M.Jha accompanied the GM.
Expressing satisfaction over the pace of work, Kumar directed the railway officials concerned to expedite work and complete the project within the stipulated time. Railways has set the deadline for commissioning the bridge by year-end, he said, adding railways has almost completed the work of laying 31 girders from both ends of the bridge while track laying work is being carried out.
The GM is personally monitoring work on three mega bridges being built in Bihar. The 3,190 metres long Munger bridge is likely to incur an expenditure of about Rs 2,361.86 crore. Earlier, it was estimated to cost about Rs 921 crore. According to an ECR official, railways and state government are sharing Rs 1,247 crore and Rs 1,116 crore, respectively. The bridge would link Sahebpur Kamal station on north side and Jamalpur station in the south, he said adding the NH 31 and state road would also be linked on completion of this bridge.
The three mega projects of Railways in Bihar are at Digha (Patna), Munger and Nirmali. These bridges would open floodgates for further improving the state’s socioeconomic condition, sources said. An official said railways has chalked out various plans for the development of this region, but, it may miss the deadline if the state government failed to resolve the local issues. Compensation was also due to several villagers.
Munger Ganga Setu, is a rail-cum-road bridge under construction across the Ganga, at Munger in the Indian state of Bihar.
The 3.19 km long bridge costing Rs. 9,300 million is located 55 km downstream of the Rajendra Setu near Mokama and 68 km upstream of the Vikramshila Setu at Bhagalpur. The bridge will form a link between NH 80 on the southern side of the Ganges and NH 31 on the northern side of the Ganges. It will also help to connect Jamalpur Junction on the Sahibganj Loop line of Eastern Railway to Sahebpur Kamal Junction on the Barauni-Katihar section of East Central Railway. The Bridge will connect districts of Begusarai and Khagaria to the Divisional headquarters Munger city.
Construction work on the bridge was inaugurated by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Prime Minister, through video conference system, in 2002.

Soil-erosion alongside tracks in Saharsa-Mansi section a cause of concern for Railways’
Saharsa (SHC): Indian Railways is making concerted efforts to fight erosion at the Fango Halt on the Saharsa-Mansi section in Samastipur division in view of the Kosi flood situation. The section under East Central Railway runs parallel to the Kosi and has come under direct threat of the river’s current. Although the river has not reached its danger mark, 1m by the Fango Halt, around 15 km southwest of the Saharsa railway station, has been eroded in the past two days.
This has prompted railway officials to maintain strict monitoring of anti-erosion work on the section. It is important to curb the erosion by the tracks as the railways are the region’s lifeline. There are no proper roads connecting Saharsa in the Kosi region with and Patna. From the Saharsa railway station alone, at least six trains start for different destinations with 10,000-12,000 passengers daily.

Bihar Flood Threat: ECR intensifies Night Patrolling of Tracks and Bridges
Hajipur (HJP): East Central Railway (ECR) GM Madhuresh Kumar on Monday held a high-level meeting with senior officials at the zonal headquarters in Hajipur in the wake of looming flood threat in Kosi region, posing danger to railway tracks. He directed the officials concerned to remain on high alert round the clock and keep a close tab on bridges and tracks.
Kumar said, “We are constantly watching the situation. Senior officials are already camping at all vulnerable points falling under Samastipur division of ECR. Railways has sufficient stock of boulders and other required materials at most of the sensitive locations under the division to save tracks from getting damaged. If required, movement of passenger trains will be regulated from safety point of view.” An emergency control room has become functional at Hajipur.
According to the GM, Koparia-Dhamara Ghat route located on Saharsa-Mansi section of Samastipur division is the most critical one and Supaul-Forbesganj route is also vulnerable to flood. Railways is at present running 14 to 16 pairs of passenger trains on these routes, which include Saharsa-Delhi Garib Rath Express and Rajrani Express, he said.
