Evolve strategy to Combat Crime aboard Train: Kalam asked Railways in 2006

Use communication technology, IT to enhance passenger safety. Network all RPF units President presents colours to RPF in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Exhorting the Railways to use emerging technology, particularly information and communication technology, to enhance passenger safety, former President of India A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Monday 23rd May, 2006 said a special strategy should be formulated to combat rising crime aboard trains.

An analysis might be conducted of the frequency and types of crime against passengers in different parts. Based on this, a strategy should be worked out for combating crimes in areas where the frequency and intensity were very high.

Mr. Kalam was speaking after presenting colours to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Dayabasti in northwest Delhi.

Executing complex missions

“Advanced sensors have become crucial to forewarn [of] many situations and to keep surveillance. The provision of state-of-the-art communication systems including mobile systems, night vision devices, information technology solutions, micro gadgets and intelligent networking with security can provide better managed solutions for critical operations. It will help you plan and execute difficult and complex missions with precision and a low casualty rate.”

Highlighting the need to network all RPF units for rapid mobilisation of additional resources in critical areas, Mr. Kalam said: “There is need to remove the division of responsibility between the Government Railway Police and the RPF” and for empowering the RPF with legal sanction to tackle all cognisable offences under the Indian Penal Code and all special Acts so that there would be a single-point responsibility for tackling crimes against passengers.

Recruitment of women

The President hailed recruitment of women constables, besides the setting up of the “Tejaswini” and “Bhairavi” squads for the safety of women passengers.

Develop ideas to integrate IT with communication: Suresh Prabhu

Panaji: Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Saturday urged the information technology sector to integrate IT with communication to make it CIT to resolve many unique problems of Indian society.

Addressing the concluding session of Elets Knowledge Exchange, Goa – an IT industry and Government of Goa event – Prabhu asked the IT sector to find out ways to eradicate illiteracy and make people of the country digitally literate.

“I want to integrate the railways to make it possible to track trains on a real-time basis,”
Prabhu said. “I also want all commercial transactions to be web-based.”

He said the IT companies should develop high-end products lamenting that “we do not have enough branded products”.

Answering a question at the closing session, he said that “Swachh Bharat” in the Railways cannot be done in a day. He asked corporates and non- governmental organisations to adopt railway stations to back the soon-to-be launched “Swachh Railways Swachh Bharat” initiative.

He said that encroachment of railway land close to tracks is a big problem but added that “you should understand socio-economic implications of the issue.”

Prabhu said the Railways will introduce Wi-Fi on a revenue sharing basis. “Bids are already in process,” the minister said.

Soon, CTBC technology to make Delhi Metro run Driverless Trains

New Delhi: The sight of driverless Delhi Metro trains whizzing past stations, crowded and deserted, is all set to become a reality as upgraded new-generation coaches are being introduced on two upcoming lines as part of its Phase-III of expansion.

Apart from “unattended” trains, the 58-km-long Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar corridor and the 34-km-long Janakpuri (West)-Botanical Garden corridors will also have a new-age signalling system.

“The frequency of trains would increase to a much greater level and the gaps between two trains would come down to around 90 seconds due to this Communication-Based Train Control (CTBC) technology,” a Metro spokesman said.

An official explained that these trains would be able to accommodate as many as 240 commuters more in six coaches as the cab of the trains is not required in driverless trains.

A total of 68 stations on the upcoming lines would also have Platform Screen Doors for greater safety and to prevent suicide attempts.

“More than 60 per cent work is complete on those lines” an official added.

Asked whether the technology would be implemented on the other upcoming lines of Phase-III, the official said that would not be possible as they are merely extensions of existing lines.

“The technology is being implemented on Line 7 and 8 as the entire lengths of the corridors are being constructed,” the official said.

The trains would also be “10 per cent” more energy efficient than the operational ones because of improved design features, including more regeneration of energy during braking and energy efficient subsystems such as LED lighting.
