Paperless Unreserved Ticketing System between New Delhi and Palwal will be operational from next month

Rail Commuters travelling on New Delhi-Palwal section can now buy Unreserved Tickets using their Mobile Phones

New Delhi: Railway commuters travelling between New Delhi and Palwal in Haryana can now buy unreserved tickets using their mobile phones by just downloading an App.

This initiative, which will become operational from next month, is a part of efforts to make unreserved tickets paperless and save the commuters from the trouble of standing in queues to buy an unreserved tickets. Under the initiative, a commuter using Android or Windows smartphone can access the Unreserved Ticketing system (UTS) application.

With the ticket booked through the UTS application, a commuter can travel ticketless to any desired destination on the 52-km Delhi-Palwal section. The commuter just has to show the booking details on the mobile, a railway official said.

The ticket can be purchased using debit or credit card. There are about 15 stations between Delhi and Palwal including Nizamuddin, Tughalakabad, Faridabad and Ballabgarh which will be all covered under the paperless ticketing system for local travellors, the official added. Developed by Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) “utsonmobile” – the paperless unreserved ticketing feature in mobile application aims to eliminate the need for printing of unreserved tickets.

The App, which is for both Android and Windows platforms, can be downloaded from Google Play Store or Windows Store and used by the user. The application provides necessary on-screen alerts to guide the passenger during the booking process.

However, ticket windows will also be made available for passengers despite the operation of paperless mobile ticket system in the suburban section. Such an initiative is already being tried on Egmore-Tambram suburban section in Chennai and Churchgate-Dahanu section in Mumbai and Delhi-Palwal will be the first in the north zone.

It was a budget proposal to provide paperless tickets in unreserved segment and we have to implement it in all suburban sections across the country, the official said.

Railways’ IT Advisory Council to outline use of IT for Railways to improve Efficiency

New Delhi: A panel set up by the Ministry of Railways is working on creating an IT Vision for the Indian Railways and identifying areas to leverage newer technologies such as Cloud, Analytics, Predictive Analysis and Geographic Information Systems and better Systems Integration to improve the efficiency of its vast and complex Railway network across the country.

Although Indian Railways has been effectively using information technology in areas such as passenger reservation and freight operations, the scope for further transformation is very large, said Som Mittal, former president of IT industry lobby NASSCOM, who is heading the 11-member information technology advisory council which was set up in May.

“The focus is to bring in more efficiency, build in more safety and integrate various operations of railways through technology,” he said. As part of its mandate, the council will “integrate and cover passenger services, freight services, asset management and train operations, safety and security as well as operations/enterprise management of the railways”, and give recommendations for strategy for implementation, capacity building and change management.

The final report of the council, likely to be submitted in the next five to six weeks after widespread consultations with industry and government bodies, will look at how existing and new technology platforms and applications can perform better by talking to each other.

“The council is looking at integrating existing applications, which were initially built for a specific need. Integrating applications will help make realtime information available. There is also a need to look at some apps where technologies are getting obsolete and may need to be rebuilt,” said Mittal.

A nearly 65,000 route km, the network generated revenue of nearly Rs 14 lakh million in 2013-14, of which about 26% came from passenger traffic and 67% from freight.

The focus, Mittal said, is on enabling a transition from management information systems to effective decision support systems, in addition to optimised use of assets and resources efficiency, moving from discrete at-a-time information to real-time information and a more integrated environment.

This real-time data could be obtained, for example, with GPS or GIS tech and using proximity sensors or RFID sensors to track locomotives and wagons. “Indian Railways uses information technology in various aspects of its working, including passenger services, freight services, asset management and back-office applications,” said Mohammad Jamshed, Additional Member (Computerisation and Information Systems), who is also part of the council. “A number of IT applications and systems are in progress and being planned,” he said.

Other members of the council include academics, IT experts, officials from the Ministry and the Centre for Railway Information Systems, which develops and manages IT applications of the railways, RailTel Corporation of India Ltd (a Telecom PSU arm of Indian Railways) and the Department of Electronics and IT.

New Delhi: The Integrated Mines and Minerals Management System (i3MS), the online data verification and permit generation software for mineral transport, is expected to be fully integrated with the Freight Operations Information System (FOIS) by the end of May.

“Pilot testing of the integration of i3MS and FOIS has been done in the Joda circle. The integration will rule out any discrepancy in ore loading and despatch data. By the end of May, we hope that the system will be rolled out at all railway sidings in the state”, said director (mines), Deepak Mohanty.

The integration of i3MS with FOIS of Railways is the first of its kind in the country. The Railway Board has advised other states to go for the system upon successful pilot testing of integration, said Mohanty.

As suggested by the Railway authorities, digital signature of all the concerned mining officers will be introduced so as to ensure transparency and accountability.

Since data and procedures pertaining to iron ore mining has been fully computerized in the state, the steel & mines department was keen on sharing all relevant information with the Railways through the electronic mode.

The onus will be on the department to issue rake-wise transit permits to the Railways. The department will also offer information like unique identity number for the rake transit permit, name of the party despatching iron ore from the railway siding, name of the party receiving the iron ore, validity period of the rake transit permit, amount of iron ore permitted for transportation in terms of rakes and type of iron ore.

This information will be automatically transferred periodically from the server of the department of respective state governments to Railway’s server at Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) in a secure mode through a firewall. The information received from the state government will be stored in the Railway server at CRIS.

Railways would periodically transmit rake wise details of the iron ore transported, including names of consignee and consignor, unique identity number of transit permit, originating station, destination station, date of loading and quantity moved through a secure mode to the state government.

The i3MS has already been integrated with the online system of commercial tax and port authorities, RTO (regional transport office) database and the online system of treasury.

AK Manocha took the reins of IRCTC as new CMD

New Delhi: A K Manocha on Monday took the reins of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) as the new Chairman and Managing Director.

Manocha has worked with the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), a PSU of railways which looks after the IT system of the Railways and develops software for it.

An Indian Railway Traffic Service Officer, Manocha has also worked in Simulation Software section in Research Design and Standard Organisation, a railway public sector unit. Prior to his new assignment, he was posted in Northern Railways.

The change have come at a time when IRCTC is engaged in introducing and popularising other IT-based services related to e-ticketing. Manocha’s appointment is being seen as a step to fast-track these services, said an official. 

In one of the new initiative, the IRCTC is launching a dedicated number on which a passenger can order food through SMS by mentioning his or her PNR number. The payment is to be made after the food is served. The service is expected to start in select trains on Thursday.
