BMRCL confident of completing process for getting safety clearance this month
Fed up with traffic, commuters who have no option but to use their cars to travel long distances to work, will have to wait another month before the East-West corridor of Namma Metro becomes operational.
This corridor will bring some usefulness to the mass transport project, which till now, has largely operated in disjointed sections without really linking one end of Bengaluru to another.
With high levels of expectations, officials at the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) are treading carefully when it comes to planning of operations for this stretch.
However, they are confident that they will be able to clear the safety application process this month. They are hopeful of making the corridor operational by early April.
The corridor will connect Baiyappanahalli in the east to Mysuru Road in the south.
It will have an underground section between M.G. Road and Magadi Road stations, which are being readied for inspection by the Commissioner for Railway Safety (CRS). Sources say the application will be filed by BMRCL some time next week.
“We are awaiting fire safety clearance for the Sir M Visveswaraya Station. Clearances for all other stations are completed. We will be submitting the application to the CRS by next week and hope that the clearance will be issued by the end of the month,” a senior official from BMRCL said.
In the past, the CRS has taken up to two weeks to issue safety clearances, but there is no set timeframe for the process.
The safety certification will be issued once the CRS is satisfied that operations on the route with passengers can be carried out safely.
“It usually takes between 10-15 days but we are confident that all documentation submitted will be satisfactory,” the official said.
The launch had been scheduled for February but was delayed by a month. Now, it will be pushed back further by at least a few weeks. Going by the current timeframe, services on the entire East-West corridor seem set for launch in April.
