MANGALURU: Railway traffic between the coast and Capital has been affected following derailment of a goods train between Yedakumeri and Siribagilu in the ghat section.

Railways said two wagons of a goods train derailed on Sunday night at around 8.10pm and a breakdown special train from Mangaluru has left for the accident spot at 8.45 pm.

The cement-laden goods train was transporting the cargo to Kozhikode in Kerala when the incident occurred. Following this, Train Nos. 16518/ 16524 Kannur/ Karwar -Bengaluru Express, scheduled to depart Mangaluru Central Station at 8.55 pm was halted. The authorities said there was no way the train could depart by the usual route since the track could not be made good for traffic since it had happened in remote part of the ghats only accessible by railway track.

Finally train 16518/ 16524 Kannur/ Karwar -Bengaluru Express left Mangaluru Railway Station at 11pm on the diverted route via Palakkad Junction, Salem and Omalur. The train ran to open timings with stoppages at Shoranur, Palakkad Junction , Erode, Salem and Omalur. Railways said arrangements had been made at Mangaluru Central to refund the ticket for those who wished to discontinue their journey.
