Ambala: After the rail traffic remained closed for eight hours on Ambala-Chandigarh track, the Northern Railway on Monday commissioned double laning of the Ambala-Dappar track. Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS) R K Kardam conducted the commissioning and permitted opening the track. Officials said that CCRS Kardam had carried out the statutory inspection of doubling work of Ambala cantt-Dappar (22.71 km) track for the last two days and permitted the track opening on Monday evening. “Speed trial run over the entire section between Ambala-Dappar was conducted and the CCRS after satisfying himself permitted opening of the line to both passenger and goods trains,” said an official statement.
According to the Northern Railway, the present speed of the trains on the track would be 70 kmph and would be increased up to 110 kmph later. The work on the double laning of the Ambala-Chandigarh railway track is to be completed in two phases, Ambala- Dappar (22.71 km) and Dappar-Chandigarh phase (22.45 km). While the first phase has now been thrown open, the work for double laning of Dappar-Chandigarh track is under way. According to officials, the target for commissioning the second phase is December next year.
The Ambala-Chandigarh track witnessed an eight-hour blockade on Monday, affecting 99 trains. Officials said that the rail services returned to normal soon after the commissioning. “The traffic has resumed on the track. From tomorrow, trains would run normally as per schedule,” Karan Singh, Senior Divisional Manager (operations), Ambala Division, told. The railway officials said that the doubling of the track would now facilitate faster movement of trains.
Dappar-Chandigarh Rail Track
The double-laning of Dappar-Chandigarh railway track is expected to be completed by end of next year, said S K Agarwal, additional general manager, Northern Railways, here on Wednesday. The work has been pending for a long time. In January 2013, when the then Union Minister for Railways Pawan Kumar Bansal had said the particular railway line would be made a double track by December 2013, Rs 199 crore was sanctioned. However, the work did not take off.
Once the double track is complete, the frequency of trains between Chandigarh and New Delhi can be increased and travel time will also be significantly reduced.
The facelift of Chandigarh railway station towards ‘world-class’ status will at least take another two years. The station was one of the five chosen from across the country for improving facilities to meet international standards.
“The project will face a minimum of two years’ delay as the Public-Private Partnership mode has been facing major hurdles. A Special Purpose Vehicle is yet to be assigned which will be responsible for development of stations across the country. Hence, the process is taking time,” the AGM said.
Last month, UT Administration, in accordance with the railways and the ministry, had approved a concept plan for the “redevelopment” of 500 acres of railway land. As per the plan, the railway station was to be self-financed project for the commercial development which will house hotels, malls and commercial establishments. Indian Railway Station Development Corporation Limited (IRSDC), in consultation with a German consultant, prepared the concept plan for its redevelopment.
The plan has been prepared on the pattern of an international airport. For instance, there will be a bank, a food court, cloak rooms and a VIP waiting lounge. Sources said emphasis would be laid on providing all facilities to passengers at the station.

He cited ‘economic slowdown’ as a main factor.
E-ticketing, parcel transfer to be digitised in 2 years: Railway officials said that by 2017, the digitisation process is expected to be replicated in Chandigarh sector and during the same time-period rail parcel process will be digitised and its data can be accessed online.
