RITES Diesel Locomotives 100KM PH to Myanma Railways
Indian Railways hands over 18 microprocessor controlled Indian locomotives to Myanmar Railways
It was the first project completed in the current Indian Line of Credit. RITES Ltd., a PSU of Ministry of Railways is a principal partner of Myanma Railways.
NEW DELHI: As per vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Indian Railways is playing a pivotal role in developing cordial relations with the neighboring countries. India and Myanmar have been long enjoying cooperation in the Railway sector over the last two decades.
To further boost the cooperation between two countries, Shri Rajen Gohain, Minister of State of Railways attended the formal handing over ceremony of 18th AC-DC 1350 HP diesel electric locomotive to Myanma Railways, supplied by RITES and manufactured by Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi, India.

These 18 locomotives are fitted with micro-processor control based system. 1350 HP AC/DC main line diesel locomotives with maximum speed of 100 KM PH have been customised for Myanma Railways, built by Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi, India. They are extremely fuel efficient are eqquipped with the latest features. Most of these supplies in the railway sector have been carried out under Indian Line of Credit. As per the agreement schedule, all locomotives were to be delivered by September, 2018. They have been delivered six months ahead of the schedule.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Rajen Gohain, Minister of State of Railways expressed his pleasure on the close cooperation between the two railway systems on regular basis since last 20 years. He congratulated Indian Railways in completing the project, much ahead of delivery schedule and providing locomotives with many contemporary new features over the earlier supplies. He thanked the Indian Embassy in Myanmar for their full coordination and assistance with the Myanmar authorities in easy facilitation of the project. The Minister said that this association will help strengthen friendly border relations with India.

On the occasion, HE U.Thant Sin Moung, Minister of Transportation and Communication mentioned the valued cordial relationship between the two countries and how it can go beyond the present interaction. He showed keen interest in the training programmes offered by the Indian Railways and on the Signaling and Telecommunication systems.
RITES, a Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Railways is the export arm of the railways undertaking various projects worldwide. RITES has engaged in the supply of Railway rolling stock (locomotives, coaches, wagons, permanent way maintenance vehicles), maintenance of railway infrastructure, technical studies, training of Myanmar Railway officials. Soon, RITES would take up the study for upgradation & maintenance of workshops. A team of experts from Diesel Modernization Works, Patiala would visit Myanmar soon.

Diesel Locomotives Works In Varanasi Successful completion of Prototype twin-unit electric Locomotive

INDIA: A prototype twin-unit electric freight locomotive is being produced at the Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi by rebuilding two diesel locomotives.

The 12-axle WAGC3 locomotive is to be formed from two permanently-coupled sections each rated at 5 000 hp, compared to 2 600 hp for each of the original WDG3A diesel-electric freight locomotives.
DLW said the project was being undertaken with a ‘crack team’ of engineers from the Research Design & Standards Organisation, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd.
The frames, bogies and traction motors of the diesel locomotive have been retained, and combined with the sidewalls and roof from a withdrawn WAM4 electric locomotive. The electrical systems are based on a WAG7 electric locomotive, while the original Alco diesel engine has been discarded.
DLW said conversion of the first section was completed on a short timescale. Work began on December 22 and the rebuilt unit was ready for testing February 28. Production of the second section is now underway.
If the conversion proves successful, further diesel locomotives could be rebuilt into electric locomotives instead of undergoing mid-life overhauls. This would help Indian Railways to expand its electric fleet to keep pace with the planned rapid roll-out of electrification infrastructure.
Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal‏ highlighted the use of indigenous technology under the Make In India initiative, and said the project would ‘give impetus’ to the government’s plans to increase the use of electric traction.

MUMBAI: Petrol pump owners have threatened to not purchase petrol and diesel for a day on May 10 and subsequently shut outlets every Sunday if their demand of higher margin is not agreed upon by the government. 
The weekly Sunday off will start from May 14 while from May 15, dealers will operate from 9 am to 6 pm to cut costs. 
The petrol dealers association said that the 'No Purchase Day' on May 10 may not cause much disruption, but it was aimed at telling state-run oil marketing companies that they are opting for 'war path'. 
They had earlier withdrawn a strike in January after the OMCs promised dealers to revise commission. They said the agitation would continue till the business becomes viable and higher margins are announced. The decision was taken at a meeting of the consortium of Indian Petroleum Dealers, which has 53,000 members. 
"The decision would be applicable after May 10 unless the government intervenes. The resolution has been taken as the oil companies have not released the dealer margins since 2011," Ravi Shinde from the Petrol Dealers' Association said. 
Currently, many outlets function between 6 am and 10 pm while some are open round the clock and seven days a week.

NEW DELHI: In a first for Indian Railways, diesel locomotives will soon haul trains by drawing power through overhead wires on an electrified route, with the public transporter embarking upon manufacturing dual-mode engines.

"We will be manufacturing dual-mode locomotives to run trains on diesel and also by drawing power through overhead wire on electrified route," said a senior railway ministry official involved in the project.

Railways will manufacture five dual-mode locomotives of 4500 horse power (HP) capacity each at Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi as a pilot project.
Though similar locomotives are operational in the US and South Africa, it will be a first in India, the official said.

Currently, 52 per cent of total trains are on diesel traction. Diesel locomotives are generally replaced by electric engines on electrified route causing delays.
"However, with the acquisition of dual-mode locos, there will be no need for changing the locomotive for electric traction as the same diesel engine will be utilized on electrified route," he said.

A dual-mode locomotive is estimated to cost about Rs 18 crore, while a 4500 HP diesel locomotive costs about Rs 13 crore.

The proposal has been forwarded to the Research Design and Standard Design (RDSO), the research wing of Indian Railway, to finalize specifications.
"After the RDSO approval, DLW will be manufacturing five such locos on a pilot basis. The locos will be pressed into service on certain electrified routes on a trial basis," said the official.
The dual-mode locomotive will be heavier than the diesel locomotive and is expected to run at a maximum speed of 135 km per hour.

A diesel locomotive is a type of railway locomotive in which the prime mover is a diesel engine, while in an electric locomotive, the engine moves on power drawn through a pantograph mounted on the roof of the train.

Pantograph is an apparatus mounted on the roof of an electric train, tram or electric bus to collect power through contact with an overhead wire.

Reliance sells diesel to Indian Railways, first time in a decade

NEW DELHI: Reliance Industries Ltd, controlled by India's richest man, has started selling diesel to the state railways for the first time since 2005/06 after pricing of the fuel was freed, a company source said on Wednesday.

Indian Railways, the country's biggest diesel guzzler, consumes up to 2.5 million tonnes of the fuel each year. Until last year, it received supplies from state refiners who used to be compensated for selling fuel at below-market rates.

The government freed diesel pricing last October, providing a level playing field to private companies like Reliance and Essar Oil.

The Reliance source, who was not authorised to speak on the record, said the company has been selling a "small quantity" of diesel to the railways.

It was not immediately clear how much it sold in 2005/06.
