PM to attend event to mark birth anniversary celebrations of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam


The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi will attend the birth anniversary celebrations of former President, Bharat Ratna Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, at DRDO Bhavan in New Delhi on October 15th, 2015. 

As part of the event, the Prime Minister will unveil a statue of Dr. Kalam. He will open and witness a photo exhibition titled "A Celebration of Dr. Kalam's Life." He will address the gathering at Kothari Auditorium, DRDO Bhavan.

Driver of Special Train blew ‘Horn’ to mark Final Respects to Dr.Abdul Kalam from Pamban Bridge

Pamban (PBM): Thousands of people arrived from various parts of the country and gathered at the narrow mohallas around the Mohideen Aandavar Mosque in Rameswaram for former President A P J Abdul Kalam’s Alvida Namaaz during this morning, as the Indian Railways have added more passenger coaches to the special passenger trains running between Madurai and Rameswaram and to alter its timings for the benefit of people who want to attend the funeral of former President A P J Abdul Kalam on Thursday.

As a mark of “Special Respects” to “His Excellency Bharata Ratna Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam”, former President of India, the Driver of the Train No.56723 Madurai – Rameswaram Special Passenger train blew ‘Horn’ aboard Passenger Train from Pamban Bridge for 3 minutes which was Dr.Abdul Kalam’s nostalgic link to past and present.  The horn was heard by all the dignitaries and crowd present there attending the final rites for Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam.

The Special Train reached Rameswaram at 10.45 a.m. with four general second class coaches and one luggage-cum-brake van with accommodation for the disabled, in addtion to the existing nine general second class coaches and two luggage cum brake vans.

Pamban (PBM): “I loved Pamban,” said former President APJ Abdul Kalam as he inaugurated the centenary celebrations of the Pamban Bridge on January 28, 2014.

Speaking at an event at the Pamban railway station to mark the beginning of the celebrations, Kalam recalled his student days when he had often crossed the bridge on trains. “I loved Pamban, especially the bridge and train journeys I made on this rail bridge while travelling for my studies and whenever I returned home,” he turned nostalgic. He termed the bridge as an engineering marvel.

According to railway sources, Kalam played a key role in protecting the bridge when gauge conversion works were undertaken on the Madurai-Rameswaram section in 2006-07.

Initially, railways planned to construct a new bridge and dismantle the existing one. Global consultancy tenders were called for, and it was estimated that construction of a new bridge would require Rs 800 crore.

There was a proposal to stop the railway line at Mandapam as the rail bridge was no longer the sole connectivity to the island, unlike in the past. “At that time, Abdul Kalam felt that rail connectivity to his hometown should not be cut. He made a personal request to the railway ministry,” said a Southern Railway official.

He was the President of country that time, and his request was considered by railways. Principal chief civil engineer D C Mithra inspected the bridge. He suggested that the existing bridge could be strengthened to broad gauge standards.

Accordingly railway engineers, with the help of technical experts from the IIT- Madras and others, conducted a detailed survey, and the bridge strengthening work was carried out at an approximate cost of Rs 24 crore. “What was estimated to be a Rs 800-crore project was completed in Rs 24 crore. Kalam was shown the presentation of the strengthening work”, the official said.

Pamban panchayat president M Patrick acknowledged the role Kalam had played for the conservation of the bridge. “We were jubilant when Kalam – the son of the soil – inaugurated the centenary celebrations of the rail bridge,” he said.

However, Kalam’s request of a centenary train between Pamban and Chennai and modernization of Pamban railway station were still pending, Patrick added.

The government of India announces with profound sorrow the death of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Former President of India at Bethany Hospital, Shillong at 1945 hours, today.

As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, seven days state mourning will be observed throughout India from July 27, 2015 to August 2, 2015, both days inclusive. During the period of state mourning, the national flag will fly at half mast on all buildings throughout India where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment.

The date, time and venue of the state funeral will be intimated later.
