To facilitate hassle free traffic management in the Gunupur-Naupada section (90.20KMs), Railway has initiated several safety related modernisation work including Electronic Interlocking System at Parlakhemundi Railway Station. The Electronic Interlocking system commissioned with effect from 10th January, 2018.
As this Station was earlier having single line, there was facility for one train only system and was giving problems to Train management resulting in inconvenience to passengers. Now this Block Station, after safety related modernisation work, will facilitate movement of two trains and lesser waiting time for passengers.
04 pairs of Trains are plying in single line Railway section between Naupada & Gunupur. These are 18117/18118 Rourkela-Gunupur-Rourkela Rajyarani Express, 58417/58418 Puri-Gunupur-Puri Passenger, 58427/58428 Palasa-Gunupur-Palasa passenger and 58506/58505 Visakhapatnam-Gunupur-Visakhapatnam passenger. As the timings of Rourkela-Puri-Rourkela Rajyaran Express and Visakhapatnam-Gunupur-Visakhapatnam having a small gap, it was difficult to pass the train in single line section. on commissioning of the 2nd line at Paralakhemundi, both the trains will run as per their scheduled timings.
Parlakhemundi Station has now become two line Station with advanced Electronic Interlocking system. The station is controlling one Level Crossing gate. Two Diesel Generators were also provided as stand by for local power supply. Integrated power supply installed to avoid blanking of Signals. The total cost of this project was Rs 2 Crores.
Further, Rs 65 lakhs invested for placing Permanent way Track material for modernizing the section. Rs 5 lakhs was invested for the civil works for renovation of station building and drainage management.
Notably, for the Gunupur–Naupada section, two pairs of passenger trains commenced service in 2011 & 2012. In 2017, Rajya Rani express connecting Gunupur to Bhubaneswar and Rourkela was introduced, which also provides connectivity to the main line trains for travel towards important stations on the Palasa–Howrah and Palasa-Chennai directions for faster travel.
BACKGROUND: In the erstwhile British regime East Coast Railway came into existence in 1893 with the construction of the Cuttack-Khurda Road-Puri line and its subsequent link up to Vijayawada by 1896. When East Coast Railway brought the rail line to Naupada in 1894, the Raja of Parlakhemundi proposed the construction of Parlakhemundi Light Railway line from Naupada to his capital Parlakhemundi which was only 40 kilometres away. With the sanction of Government in 1898, the Narrow Gauge rail line work commenced. The cost at that time was Rs. 7 lakhs and the line was opened to traffic in 1900 A.D. Despite losses in this line initially, by 1910, it started making marginal profits and after 1924-25, the profits increased. Later due to no proper road connectivity, it was decided to extend the line from Parlakhemundi to Gunupur for running narrow gauge goods trains also. In two phases, the stretch between Parlakhemundi–Gunupur (50 kilometres) was completed in 1929-31. Gradually running of goods trains became financially unviable and later only two pairs of passenger trains ran between Naupada–Gunupur with an average of running time of 5-hours.
Under the ‘Project Unigauge’, the Government sanctioned conversion of this line to Broad Gauge. The gauge conversion was done in 2011.
