Indian Railways approves C-DOT Gears for WiFi services

New Delhi: WiFi technology of state-run Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) has been approved by Indian Railways, Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha said today. “C-DoT WiFi Technology got approved by Railways,” Sinha tweeted.

Indian Railway is rolling out free WiFi service at busy stations. It has plans to roll out Google supported free WiFi service at 100 stations by end of this year and 400 by the end of next year.

C-DOT long range Wi-Fi combines three unique benefits of three technologies into one, viz. long reach of optical fiber to take the high speed signal feed to 60 kms, spectrum sensing Wi-Fi solution to take the signal reliably beyond a great distance further and Mesh technology which enables the signal to reach beyond Line of Sight as well as provide redundance; ensuring reliable operations even in case of break of some links. Frequent power cuts is an ailing problem of rural and semi urban India. Using diesel generators is not only costly, it also increses Carbon foot print of the country. C-DOT solar Wi-Fi solution is also an ideal solution for this situation, providing cost-effective broadband services to urban, semi urban, rural and unconnected areas. It is ideally suited for creating hot spots in/around rural schools/ panchyats etc.

Most of the equipment installed in Indian telecom network are imported. Approval of C-DoT WiFi equipment will help deployment of indigenously made gears. The Minister, who presided over the 44th meeting of the C-DoT Governing council, also directed the company to think in terms of 5G technology and asked the state-run telecom solutions developer to consider and recruit the best brains.
