Telangana IT Secretary hints at Light Rail Transit System for Hyderabad’s new ITIR Region
Hyderabad: After metro rail, the Telangana government is now mulling a Light Rail Transit System (LRTS) for the Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR), to mainly connect the metro rail stations in Miyapur and Shilparamam to the IT hubs.
The Telangana government has decided to develop the ITIR regions of Shamshabad and Uppal area on par with Cyberabad. The development plans, which include enhancing infrastructure facility, providing better transportation and making the area safe and secure, are expected to be ready by end of November this year.
A committee that was constituted comprising principal secretary of Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD), metropolitan commissioner of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and secretary of Information Technology and Communications (IT&C) department, has reportedly given its nod to this rail system in the ITIR region. The LRTS is a medium capacity mode of mass rapid transport that straddles between the heavy capacity metro rail and the low capacity bus services. Light rails usually comprise two to three cars and have a carrying capacity of 25,000 to 30,000 passengers per hour per direction, whereas metro rail caters to 65,000 to 70,000 passengers per hour per direction.
The committee, it is learnt, submitted to the government that the LRT system is the only option for the region as metro rail connectivity cannot be extended to other IT areas like Gachibowli, Financial District, Rayadurg, Miyapur and ISB areas where several IT fi rms have set up their offi ces. This, as the expansion would involve huge costs. Also, the light rail project can be completed within a year without any hitches.
While a Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) was also considered for connecting the IT regions, the proposal hasn’t been taken forward given the system’s poor show both in Delhi and Pune. Also, the BRTS’ carrying capacity is much lower than that of the Light Rail. “The government us actively considering LRTS for ITIR areas connecting Miyapur and Shilparamam,” IT&C department secretary, Harpreet Singh, told on Friday.
Meanwhile, a Comprehensive Transportation Study (CTS) for Hyderabad Metropolitan Area prepared by LEA International Ltd has suggested LRTS/BRTS for 393 km especially along the Outer Ring Road. The HMDA has sent the CTS report to various departments like the Hyderabad Metro Rail, BRTS to RTC and MMTS for railways and GHMC for further process.
“Since the proposed ITIR is located in different corners of the city, it would be a combination of the metro rail, MMTS, BRTS and LRTS. The details of the project report have to be prepared for the ITIR,” HMDA metropolitan commissioner, Neerabh Kumar Prasad, said.
