SCR Launches a Special Drive on Safety at Unmanned Railway Level Crossings
South Central Railway has initiated a fortnight-long special drive on safety at Unmanned Railway Level Crossings (UMLCs) all over the Zone. Shri P.K.Srivastava, General Manager, South Central Railway issued instructions to undertake this focused campaign aimed at avoiding accidents at unmanned level crossings. The General Manager held a detailed review meeting through video conferencing with Divisional Railway Managers of all the six Divisions of the Zone at Rail Nilayam, Secunderabad, today i.e., 28th July, 2014 on issues related to safety at UMLCs and also the modalities for the fortnight long safety drive launched.
During this fortnight long special campaign, SCR officials will focus on thorough inspection of safety measures including the availability of requisite infrastructure at Unmanned Level Crossings such as road surface, proper approaches, warning boards to road users, stop boards, whistle boards, speed breakers and visibility to the road users etc. A close watch will be kept on the loco pilots to monitor their whistling habits while approaching a level crossing. Joint ambush checks will be conducted involving the Railway Protection Force, Government Railway Police and civil authorities at the Railway Level Crossings, to apprehend errant road users under The Motor Vehicles Act / The Railways Act. Safety seminars are being organized in all the Divisions on SCR to sensitize the railway staff, the road users and the public in general on this subject.
With a view to spread Public awareness on safety at level crossings, SCR has taken up a multi-pronged publicity campaign through various Media - the newspapers, television, FM radio, CCTVs and public announcement system at railway stations. Emphasis is being given to educate road users on the need to observe all safety precautions while passing across UMLCs (STOP, LOOK and PROCEED).
In addition, safety messages are being delivered to the public through directed SMS system highlighting the need to be cautious and watchful at the time of crossing UMLCs. Street Plays are also being organized at strategic locations to reach out to targeted groups of people in rural areas, duly utilizing the services of the local village panchayats. Posters / banners / leaflets are also being displayed / distributed at public places to strengthen the public awareness on the precautions to be taken at level crossings in the interest of public safety.
