Railway Protection Force Personnel Deployed at Busy Manned Railway Level Crossing Gates on SCR to Curb Trespassing

SCR deployed Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel to guard against trespassing at identified railway manned level crossing gates, especially at busy gates in twin cities. This exercise is aimed at counselling the road users on the dangers of trespassing the track, when level crosssing gate is in closed condition.

In this connection, South Central Railway has launched a special week long drive to curb the menace of trespassing of closed manned railway level crossings and crossing railway tracks at unauthorized locations, where such instances are leading to injuries / loss of lives. During this week-long campaign, RPF personnel will be posted at LC gates with very high traffic density to caution the road users against trespassing railway tracks at  closed level crossing gates. Two- wheeler drivers will be prevented from unlawfully passing through a closed railway level crossing gate from underneath the closed gate barriers.

A closed railway level crossing gate always denotes that a train is on its way towards the gate. The train would take only a few minutes to pass the gate. Hence, the public who need to pass across the level crossing manned gate have to wait till the gates are opened to the road traffic for the safety of road users and also for train safety. Public awareness campaigns are also being undertaken through various Media to educate the road users on the risks of trespassing the railway tracks.

After the week long campaign, the RPF personnel will continue to conduct random / surprise checks regularly to nab the road vehicle drivers who contravene the norms of The Railway Act pertaining to trespassing.

Any person found trespassing the railway track will be liable for prosecution under Section 147 of The Railway Act, 1989 which entails punishment with imprisonment for a term up to six months, of with fine up to Rs. one thousand or with both. As per Section 154 of The Railways Act 1989, if any person does any act in a rash and negligent manner which is likely to endanger the safety of railway travelers, he shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term up to one year or with fine or with both.

SCR appeals to the Public not to cross railway tracks in unauthorized way and requests to always use railway level crossings, Foot over Bridges, Road over / under Bridges etc only to cross the Railway tracks. It is also advised that passengers board the trains from the platform side only and not from the wrong side at stations.
