VTU will become India’s first University to offer PG Course in Railway Engineering

Belgaum (BGM): Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) is all set to introduce a postgraduate course (M.Tech.) in Railway Engineering from the academic year 2015-16. With that, the VTU will become India’s first university to provide a PG programme in Railway Engineering.

As experts in the university are giving final touches to the course material, Vice-Chancellor H.Maheshappa said that universities are expected to produce experts in substantial numbers to aid qualitative improvement of the complex railway engineering network.

Dr.Maheshappa said there is a great demand for trained engineers in Railway Engineering, and armed with a Degree from VTU, graduates have the opportunity to get involved in all projects close to home or further away. He said VTU enhances students’ employability with opportunities to gain industry experience, assisting them to secure mentoring opportunities, internships and placements.

D.H. Rao, former dean of VTU, said the syllabus for the PG programme is being articulated in consultation with experts in the domain area. The focus will be on topics such as Locomotive Design, Structural Analysis, Seating Design, Human Factors and Ergonomics, Braking System, Safety and Crash Engineering, and Aerodynamics for high speed, rail-road track design and analysis followed by nearly 16 weeks of internship and project.

The VTU was also working to have tie-up with the Railways Engineering Department for internship. Graduates will also have a solid grounding in Electrical Engineering and will be able to find employment in organisations across the electrical engineering industry as well.

The need for railway engineers is abundant for many existing and future expansion plans in constructing and maintaining Metro systems in India.

Railway Engineering Course at Visvesvayara Technological University Next Year

Belagavi (BGM): Visvesvayara Technological University (VTU) Vice-Chancellor H Maheshappa announced that a new railway engineering course would be started in the university from the next academic year.

At the 14th annual convocation of VTU on Saturday, he said the university, which has 207 engineering colleges affiliated to it in the state, was the first varsity in the country to introduce the innovative digital evaluation system.

All the answer scripts written by the students are digitalised immediately after the examination and stored in a server. The teachers evaluate the answer scripts on a computer screen and enter the marks immediately. The process helps avoid tampering of answer scripts, he added.

The VTU honoured Padma Bhushan V K Aatre and Reva University Chancellor P Shyama Raju with Doctor of Science honorary degrees during the convocation.

Aatre, a scientist and former secretary of the Defence Research and Development Organisation and director general of the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), was also a former scientific adviser to the defence minister. He completed his BE in Electrical Engineering from the University of Mysore in 1961 and ME from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru in 1963. He completed his PhD from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 1967.

He joined the DRDO at the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory in 1980 and became its director in 1984. He was conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2000.

Raju is the founder of Reva Group of Educational Institutions and REVA University in Bengaluru.

With his zeal, visionary outlook and philanthropic approach, coupled with four decades of long entrepreneurial leadership and decade-long experience in higher education, he is recognised as a leading contributor to the fast-growing education sector.

Governor Vajubhai Vala presented gold medals to students who excelled in various subjects and certificates to PhD degree holders during the programme. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu was also present.

IPWE invites applications for admission in Diploma in Railway Engineering

The Institution of Permanent Way Engineers (India) invited applications for admission to the one year Correspondence Course of Diploma in Railway Engineering from both Railway and non-Railway personnel for the academic year 2014-15. Interested and eligible candidates may apply before August 31, 2014.

Eligibility

(a)  Railway Personnel working as employees of Indian Railways including employees of Konkan Railway, Port Trust Railways, RITES, IRCON, CRIS, CONCOR, DMRC, RLDA, RVNL, MVRC and other Railway PSUs : High School/SSC or equivalent qualification with maths or science and having a minimum of 3 years experience over Railways or having 3-years Diploma in any Engineering discipline recognised by Central/State or Union Territory Government or a Science/ Engineering Graduate or a Graduate having had Maths or Science as one of the subjects in Intermediate/Plus 2 of SSC.
(b)  Non-Railway persons: The applicant should be a 3-years Diploma holder in any discipline of Engineering recognised by Central/State or UT Government or a Science/Engineering Graduate or a Graduate having had Maths or Science as one of the subjects in Intermediate/Plus 2 of S.S.C.
