South Central Railway MMTS Service Connecting 29 Stations with Passenger Capacity 1.65 Lakhs
The Multi Modal Transport System (MMTS) project is a first of its kind project uniquely designed to serve the people of twin cities with the sharing of funds by the state government. MMTS is often referred as one of the major transportation lifeline systems of Hyderabad and Secunderabad twin cities.
Now, it is widely acclaimed as most reliable, safest and economical modes of transport system serving the people of twin cities. MMTS trains were flagged off by Shri L K. Advani, the then Hon’ble Deputy Prime Minister of India on 9th August, 2003 at a function held at Bhoiguda side of Secunderabad. It completes 16 years of successful service to the people today i.e., 8th August, 2019.
Ø This is unique suburban transportation project started jointly by Railways and State Government to ease the traffic congestion in the Hyderabad city.
Ø As per the agreement, 2/3rd expenditure of the project has to be borne by State Government and 1/3rd by Railways.
Ø MMTS was initially started its operations on 9th August, 2003 in the Sections between Secunderabad-Lingampalli and Hyderabad-Lingampalli to a stretch of 29 Kms.
Ø Later, the section between Secunderabad-Falaknuma to a stretch of 15 Kms is also brought under MMTS network in February 2014.
Ø Accordingly, MMTS made operational to cater the twin cities commuters to a stretch of 44 Kms spread over between Falaknuma-Secunderabad-Hyderabad-Begumpet-Lingampalli covering 26 Railway stations, connecting eastern part of the city with the western end.
Ø Initial investment for the MMTS Project Phase-I was Rs. 158.83 crores, where Rs. 98.75 crores were allotted for fixed structures and Rs. 60.08 crores for rolling stock.
Ø Added to the present MMTS sections, recently the section between Telapur-Ramachandrapuram for a distance of 6 Kms with addition of 3 stations, which is part of MMTS Phase-II, has become operational from 9th June, 2019.
Ø Initially the fare structure for these services were on par with normal Mail/Express trains. Further, due to its response from commuters, these sections and stations were identified by Railway Board as “Suburban” Stations and sections w.e.f., 15th December, 2012.
Ø After identifying as suburban stations, several passenger amenities like foot over bridges, toilets, high level platforms, wide circulating areas with parking facilities, enhanced facilities for Divyangjan etc., were provided for strengthening the safety and comforts of the commuters.
Ø Initially, the minimum fare is Rs. 5/- and the maximum fare is Rs. 10/-. After introduction of Telapur-Ramachandrapuram section of 6 kms stretch, the maximum fare has become Rs. 15/-. In fact, the minimum fare of Rs. 5/- is continuing from its introduction.
Ø Season ticket facility is available for daily commuters of MMTS services which is a meager amount compared to other modes of transport in Hyderabad. In addition, a combination season ticket to travel in both MMTS and city bus services which is known as “General Bus Ticket (GBT)” is also available at a nominal price of Rs. 880.
Ø Progressive increase in the passengers’ trend and increase in the train services are appended below.
Ø Presently, the average ridership in the MMTS Suburban section is 1.65 lakh passengers per day spread over 50 Kms connecting 29 stations.
