SCR Handles Record Rush of Pilgrim Traffic During Krishna Pushkaram

 South Central Railway has successfully handled the rush of Pilgrim Traffic during Krishna Pushkaram, held from 12th to 23rd August, 2016. Elaborate all round arrangements made by SCR enabled the Zone register a record high in terms of Passenger Volumes during the period, o­n its network.

A total of 691 Special Trains were run during Krishna Pushkaram-2016 by SCR, 295 more than what were run for Krishna Pushkaram-2004. The Passenger traffic catered during the 12 day event touched 41 Lakh, which is an increase of over 100% as compared to the traffic handled in the earlier Krishna Pushkaram. The revenue earnings touched Rs. 47 Crore (Appox.). In addition to the special trains, 4871 coaches were augmented by various trains, over 200 % increase as compared to the previous Krishna Pushkaram.

The highlight in terms of the successful handling of passenger traffic during Krishna Pushkaram-2016 by SCR is the fact that the overall punctuality of regular trains was not affected and it remained above 96% during the period. 26 emergency trains were run basing o­n dynamic analysis of passenger traffic trends by utilising extra rakes kept in readiness to cater to sudden rush.

Shri Ravindra Gupta, General Manager, South Central Railway had drawn up an elaborate plan to identify 13 stations o­n its network i.e., Vijayawada, Krishna Canal, Madhura Nagar, Gunadala, Rayanapadu, Guntur, Repalle, Peddakurapadu, Mangalagiri, Vishnupuram, Pondugula, Krishna and Gadwal Railway stations. All the arrangements in terms of passenger facilities / amenities such as temporary / additional waiting sheds, Ticketing Counters, Toilets, Drinking water, Cafeteria, Enquiry Counters, Medical Aid, Wheel Chairs, CCTV surveillance system, Public Announcement System etc., were made to serve the needs of the rail using pilgrims at the identified stations at a cost of Rs.35 Crore. With a view to cater the traffic rush, Special Trains were scheduled, extra coaches attached and temporary stoppages provided several long distance trains.

The introduction of Mobile Ticket Booking & Enquiry Vans stationed at various Pushkar Ghats and GPRS based Hand Held Mobile Terminals for issue of rail Tickets  proved a boon for the rail users. 2000 additional Railway personnel were deputed for temporary duty during Krishna Pushkaram period, who included 1250 Railway Protection Force (RPF) and 450 Commercial staff. In addition, 600 contract staff were deployed to handle cleanliness work etc., all these preparations undertaken in advance borne excellent results, deriving appreciation for SCR from all quarters. Extensive publicity of Special Trains and other amenities in place was undertaken through Print, Electronic and Social Media which led to enhance awareness amongst the rail users and ensured convenience to their travel plans.  

Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Hon’ble Minister of Railways; Shri N.Chandrababu Naidu, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh; Shri M.Venkaiah Naidu, Hon’ble Union Minister of Urban Development, Housing, Urban Poverty Alleviation and Information & Broadcasting expressed their appreciation of SCR’s handling of Krishna Pushkaram Traffic by means of a well drawn strategy and hard work put in by the Officials and Staff of the Zone.
