Western Railway losing 15 crore a day due to Gujjar stir

MUMBAI: Western Railway has been incurring a loss of Rs 15 crore per day due to cancellation of passenger and goods trains on the Mumbai-New Delhi route since the Gujjar community, on May 21, began blocking tracks in Rajasthan to demand 5% reservation quota.

A WR official said, "On an average, 15-20 trains are cancelled every day. The revenue from premium trains like Rajdhani is Rs 25 lakh while that from regular trains is around Rs 12-15 crore." The freight traffic too has been affected with losses estimated at Rs 8 crore.

Meanwhile, WR cancelled five trains—19023 Mumbai Central-Firozpur Janta Express, 19037 Bandra Terminus-Gorakhpur Avadh Express, 22913 Mumbai Central-New Delhi AC Premium Express, 22917 Bandra Terminus-Haridwar Superfast Express and 12907 Bandra Terminus-Nizamuddin Maharashtra Sampark Kranti Express—on Wednesday.
