Indian Railways make Arrangements to Provide Assistance to Earthquake Affected People of Nepal
Railways through its PSU IRCTC supplies ‘Rail Neer’ Drinking Water Bottles
Extra Coaches and Special Trains to Clear Stranded Passengers from Gorakhpur and Raxaul Stations
Free Railway Ticket to Needy Passengers
Under the directions of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, all concerned Ministries of Government of India are contributing in the relief work for the earthquake victims of Nepal. Indian Railways too has geared up its machinery to contribute in this effort. The Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu instructed railway officials to extend all necessary help to affected people during this earthquake tragedy and took the initiative of seeking suggestions from the public regarding the type of assistance the railways could provide. Various suggestions were received on the social media platforms of the Railway Ministry. The Railway Minister himself is monitoring the situation closely and has directed respective Railway Board members to do the same.
The Railway Minister directed, Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation(IRCTC) , the Railway PSU to dispatch Rail Neer Bottles through Indian Air Force to Nepal. IRCTC has so far supplied 1.86 lakh litre Rail Neer water and is committed to supply more Rail Neer bottles as per requirement.
In order to ensure that all evacuees reach their destination within India with the least amount of trouble, the rail heads at the point of entry from Nepal and some other concerned stations have been fully geared up to provide all possible assistance to Nepal.
Northern Railway has opened a special Railway Reservation counter at T-3 International Airport at Delhi for facilitating railway travel of Nepal earthquake evacuees. North Eastern Railway has made special travel arrangements at Gorakhpur Railway station in Uttar Pradesh, whereas East Central Railway has made special arrangements at Raxaul railway station in Bihar for the people coming from Nepal. Special help booths and first aid centres have been set up at these border stations for the benefit of earthquake affected persons The stranded persons coming from Nepal are being provided berths/seat in trains by attaching additional coaches. Special trains have been arranged from Raxaul towards Kolkata and Patna .So far more than 2100 persons have been sent to different destinations from Gorakhpur and more than 3000 persons have been cleared to different destinations from Raxaul. Sufficient number of coaches are being kept as standby at both places for any short notice requirement. In a special gesture, the Government is providing free railway tickets to needy persons.
Senior railway officials are camping at the stations and coordinating with the local state government administration to supervise assistance.
Additional goods trains of petrol/diesel tanks have been pressed into service and are being moved to Raxaul in the faster mode to ensure availability of adequate stock of petroleum products for supply to Nepal.
