Wi-Fi facility has been provided at 7 railway stations

Indian Railways has provided Free Wi-Fi at seven railway stations out of 407 stations planned for high speed Internet.

Manoj Sinha, minister of state for railways said, “Wi-Fi facility has been provided at 7 railway stations namely Bengaluru, New Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Agra Cantonment, Varanasi and Secunderabad.”

The internet access is provided free to the users for first 30 minutes. For usage beyond free minutes, it is priced at Rs 25 for 30 minutes and Rs 35 for one hour and is valid through 24 hours.

Indian Railways have plans to provide Wi-Fi facility at 75 A1 stations and 332 A category stations throughout the country and in select trains in a phase-wise manner.

In the next 12 months, Indian Railways is planning to introduce Wi-Fi services at 75 A1 category stations and later on will focus on A category stations.

Presently, provision of Wi-Fi facility at 75 ‘A1’ category stations is in progress. Provision of Wi-Fi broadband facility in other select trains involves bandwidth from Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and modification in power cars to house satellite antenna and associated equipments. It will take 18-24 months for completion, subject to availability of funds.

Wi-Fi facility in three rakes of Howrah Rajdhani Express has been provided as a pilot project and Indian Railways further proposes to provide this facility in select trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duranto.

This facility will be provided by selecting suitable technology for continuous connectivity with the World Wide Web when the train is on move.
