DISASTER MANAGEMENT SKILLS DEMONSTRATED BY ER CIVIL DEFENCE

The Civil Defence Volunteers of Eastern Railway’s Headquarters, Divisions and Workshops observed 52nd All India Annual Civil Defence Week – 2014 at Bell Institute Ground, Eastern Railway, Kanchrapara today (4.12.2014).
Shri R. K. Gupta, General Manager, Eastern Railway & Chief Patron of Eastern Railway’s Civil Defence took the salute by Civil Defence contingents from Eastern Railway’s Headquarters and Divisions & Workshops.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Gupta said that Eastern Railway always attaches importance upon Civil Defence training and activities to equip the civil defence unit to come forward during emergency situation. He pointed out that the Civil Defence Voluteers of Eastern Railway have now emerged as an integral part of the rescue team working not only during national calamities like flood etc. they are also actively rendering their services during festive seasons.
Shri U. K. Bal, Sr. Deputy General Manager, Eastern Railway said that the Civil Defence contingents actively participate in rescue operations in case of Railway accidents and are also effectively utilized in assisting the Civil forces during rush of passengers in melas, summer & puja rushes, other festivals etc.
The contingents demonstrated today the unique disaster management skills like rescue operations in high-rise buildings, mock fire-fighting, rescue operation just after air raid and bomb blast, first-aid treatment of the victims etc.
Shri Ram Prakash, Chief Workshop Manager, Eastern Railway, Kanchrapara spoke on the occasion and Smt. Jaya Verma Sinha, Divisional Railway Manager, Sealdah was also present.
Civil Defence activities were started in Indian Railways as also in Eastern Railway in 1962. Presently about 8000 employees of Eastern Railway are trained in Civil Defence activities.
