NORTHERN RAILWAY ORGANISES SPECIAL DRIVE TO TACKLE MENACE OF SMOKING ON STATION PREMISES/IN TRAINS

Keeping in view the serious potential of fire hazards in trains due to smoking and the repeated incidents associated in the past due to wanton negligence by passengers, the Ministry of Railways has directed for a Special Drive for a period of seven days with immediate effect. All Ticket Checking Staff and train manning staff have been directed to zero-in on the menace of smoking by on-board passengers especially in the AC compartments and also penalize general public indulging in smoking in the railway premises.

Ministry of Railways had banned the sale of cigarettes and bidis in trains and railway premises in the year 1999. In consonance with the initiative of Govt. of India to ban smoking in public places in 2008, the Railway has been implementing ibid provision through Sec. 167 of the Railways Act and penalizes offenders during periodical checks.

Northern Railway appeals to rail passengers to fight this evil  not only by desisting from smoking on station premises and trains but also raise objection to such passengers who smoke as smoking is equally hazardous for the health of co-passengers/non-smokers as well.
