Implement Dindigul-Kumili railway line project soon: forum
The Dindigul-Kumuli Broad Gauge Scheme Agitators’ Committee plans to stage a protest in Chennai on September 29.
Its president R. Sankaranarayanan said it had been decided at a meeting held here on Monday that members of various traders’ associations, representatives of political parties and the general public would stage the protest in front of Chennai Collectorate.
The State and Central governments should jointly execute this project. Theni district had been deprived of rail connectivity since 2009 ever since the Madurai-Bodi metre gauge train services were stopped. Despite all trade and farming activities being dependent on markets across the country, this region had been deprived of rail services for long.
In the absence of train services, traders and farmers had to depend on road transport. Thousands of people had been travelling by bus to Chennai, Bangalore and other places from this region every day. If at all they wanted to take a train, they must either go to Dindigul or Madurai. Hence, it was imperative that a railway line was laid from Dindigul to Kumili at the earliest.
Mr. Sankaranarayanan deplored that a meagre sum had been sanctioned for gauge conversion of the Madurai-Bodi section in the last railway budget.
