Railway seek to rope in NGOs for better facilities

Mumbai:  The Central Railway (CR) has issued a directive to all its divisions, including Mumbai to look into possibilities of involving NGOs, charitable institutions and trusts to provide better passenger amenities.

The directive is a first-of-its-kind after the same had been stated in the Railway Budget in July.

Divisional Railway Manager Mukesh Nigam said, “The railways has been looking to provide passenger amenities through NGOs and we are trying to approach them with the idea. We are yet to get exact guidelines.”

Meanwhile, Nandita Shah from Akshara Foundation, who is involved in the ‘Right to Pee’ campaign, said that they are not in support of the idea. “The onus has to lie with the Railways. We feel it is not the NGO’s job to generate money for the railways to maintain their toilets. We are more than happy to conduct workshops for railway police to make security better.”
