BAGNAN ROAD OVER BRIDGE OPENED FOR ROAD TRAFFIC

SOUTH EASTERN RAILWAY PRESS RELEASE

BAGNAN ROAD OVER BRIDGE OPENED FOR ROAD TRAFFIC

Kolkata, 1st August, 2014:

The Road Over Bridge at Bagnan was opened to Road Traffic today i.e. 1stAugust, 2014. The construction of Bagnan Road Over Bridge, a stretch of 1180 metres long at the Level Crossing Gate No.39 at Howrah end of Bagnan Station in Howrah- Kharagpur Section has been completed with a revised estimated cost of Rs.43.56 crore borne by the South Eastern Railway and Govt. of West Bengal in ratio of 50:50. The opening of the Road Over Bridge at Bagnan will immensely help the local people as well as adjacent areas and will ease out the road traffic and make the train running smooth.

JUSTIFICATION OF CONSTRUCTION OF ROAD OVER BRIDGE AT BAGNAN

The existing Bagnan-Kamalpur Road connecting NH-6 runs along the railway track and after crossing the Level Crossing Gate No.39 on Howrah-Kharagpur Section it passes southward towards Kamalpur. For the frequent movement of high speed EMU and Superfast Mail/ Express trains, the Level Crossing has to be kept closed a number of times, approximately 150 times per day, with a total time of closing being more than 14 hours a day. Moreover, the traffic vehicles unit over this level crossing reached more than 6.6 lakhs in the year 2013. Consequently, the blockage of traffic is a regular affair at this level crossing. With a view to overcome this bottleneck, the provision of a Road Over Bridge in lieu of existing level crossing was felt necessary.

COMPLETION OF GIGANTIC WORK BY RAILWAY

The two-lane Road Over Bridge has been constructed with a carriage way of 7.5 metres width and footpath of 1.5 metres width on both sides. The length of Road Over Bridge in railway portion is 55.47 metres having two-shore spans of 15 metres each and a main span of 25.47 metres passing across four railway lines.

In the railway portion, the main span of 25.47 metres has been provided with “I” section of PSC Girder of three numbers each having weight of approximate 60 tonnes. The Girders were casted on the ground about 50 metres away from the track. Launching of all the girders on the Piers across four railway lines was a challenging task. The special launching methodology putting the PSC girders on a specially designed Wheel Mounted Trolley kept on a temporary railway track across the existing four main lines railway track and then lifting the girders with the help of two numbers of 140-tonne railway crane. Such launching scheme was never done in the railway history earlier, but the whole work was done very successfully in a record time of 8 hours which was a commendable task done by South Eastern Railway. This massive gigantic work was successfully completed much before schedule with the dedicated and untiring efforts by the work force of 500 officers, engineers and staff deployed for the launching of 3 girders of road over bridge.

The portion above the railway track was constructed by SER whereas the approach road on both sides was constructed by the Govt. of West Bengal.

The Road Over Bridge was opened in presence of the Hon’ble MP Janab Sultan Ahmed and other dignitaries. From SER side, those present included Shri Ratan Kumar, Chief Administrative Officer(Construction) and Shri Vipin Kumar, Chief Engineer (Construction) / Head Quarters.
