RVNL to launch field work for Rs.817 Crore MMTS Phase-II Project

Secunderabad (SC): Works on the much-awaited MMTS (multi-modal transport system) Phase-II project in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad will commence this month, with the finalisation of tenders for works in six of the seven segments. The Phase II will add 78.1 km of track to the network, taking the total to over 120 km., according to P.K.Srivastava, General Manager, South Central Railway (SCR).

The joint venture partners, who have been awarded the project, have already deposited the requisite performance guarantee amount with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), clearing the decks to launch the field works on the project.

After conducting a high-level review meeting here on Monday, Srivastava emphasised that there should be no further delay in commencing the work on Phase-II as the project was critical in strengthening the railway infrastructure in the state.

The Phase II MMTs works are expected to cost Rs. 817 crore, of which the Telangana government will bear two thirds of the cost, railways said. It would involve works in seven segments out of which works on six of them will commence very soon, under three different packages, said SCR General Manager P.K. Srivastava.

Except for the works in Falaknuma-Umdanagar-Shamshabad (airport connectivity) stretch, for which tenders are yet to be invited, works in all other corridors are going to be taken up simultaneously under three different packages.

The six works to be taken up immediately are doubling and electrification of Sanathnagar-Moula Ali, Moula Ali-Malkajgiri-Sitafalmandi and Bolarum-Medchal sectors, quadrupling and electrification of the Moula Ali-Ghatkesar stretch electrification and remodelling of stations on Secunderabad-Bolarum route and restoration of track and electrification on Tellapur-Patancheru stretch.

“On completion, this project enables to run more number of suburban passenger services, and helps ease out the current operational constraints being faced in and around the Secunderabad railway complex.  When the phase two comes into existence, localities on Hyderabad outskirts, including Ramachandrapuram, Nallagandla, Tellapur, Patancheru, Ghatkesar, Moula Ali and those between Malakpet and Umdanagar will get connected. Phase II would also include connectivity to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad for which tenders are yet to be invited, Srivastava said.

Currently, MMTS services take about 1.5 lakh passengers over a distance of about 43 km between Falaknuma on one side and Lingampally on the other, including Nampally and Secunderabad on the network.

Trains coming from Falaknuma go past Secunderabad and slightly ahead of the Necklace Road Station, take a left towards Nampally and right to proceed to Lingampally.

When completed over a timeframe between 30 and 36 months, the network will carry 5 lakh passengers in all, said Mr. Srivastava.
