MASSIVE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN BY EASTERN RAILWAY

The genesis of Eastern Railway dates back to August 15, 1854, when the first train ran on East Indian Railway (EIR) from Howrah to Hooghly covering a distance of 24 miles.

After reorganization, Eastern Railway now has four divisions – Sealdah, Howrah, Asansol and Malda, serving the states of West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand.  Presently, it is running 1,912 trains per day and carrying 33 lakh passengers daily.  It has loaded 62.384 million tonnes of freight surpassing all its previous performance. In passenger front also, it has made a mark by carrying 119.65 crores of passengers during 2013-14 and earned Rs. 2,043.80 crores from passenger traffic this year which is 18.91% higher than the previous year.
